A report by the Office of the Chief Economist highlights the gas industry’s contribution to the Australian economy. It estimates that gas accounted for 407.6 petajoules of the manufacturing industry’s final energy consumption in 2013-14, compared with just 225.6 petajoules of electricity. It also notes that the gas industry has a workforce of about 155,000. Australian Pipelines & Gas Association CEO Cheryl Cartwright says the report demonstrates the need for a greater focus on supplying gas for domestic use rather than to export markets.

PricewaterhouseCoopers forecasts that Australia’s oil and gas industry will be worth $A67bn to the national economy by 2029-30, compared with just $A32bn in the 2012-13 financial year. The firm’s report was prepared on behalf of the Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA), and notes that the sector contributes more value to the economy than any other industry. APPEA CEO David Byers says the report demonstrates that gas supplies should not be reserved for domestic use

Central Petroleum CEO Richard Cottee supports a gas pipeline from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory to Moomba in South Australia. He said that the pipeline, costing about $A1.3 billion, would lead to a transparent gas price at Moomba. A hub-based pricing system would stimulate investment in increased supply and eventually reduce gas prices in the eastern states
