The federal government has indicated that it will provide support to any potential buyers of the failed Rex Airlines to ensure that the carrier’s regional services continue. The government has emphasised that it is not participating in the sale process, but would be open to acquiring Rex if no private-sector buyer emerges. The government became Rex’s biggest creditor in January after agreeing to buy the $50m debt of the airline’s key investor. The government also provided Rex with an $80m loan facility to enable it to continue servicing regional routes until mid-2025. Rex has total debt of about $500m.

The federal government may be forced to nationalise some companies as part of its response to the economic problems being caused by the coronavirus epidemic. Virgin Australia is cited as one company that the government cannot allow to fail, as having a domestic aviation network essentially dominated by one airline once the worst of the virus has passed would not be considered tolerable. Economist Chris Richardson notes that the government is going to have to spend huge amounts of money to fix the Australian economy "without batting an eyelid".

Federal Labor MP Nick Champion has called for Chinese company Landbridge’s 99-year lease on Darwin Port, which it was awarded by the Northern Territory Government in 2015 under a $500 million deal, to be scrapped. Champion, who is the Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee, says he does not think that placing the port back into Commonwealth control will anger the Chinese government. Neil James from the Australian Defence Association says the suggestion to nationalise Darwin Port is a sensible one.
