The Western Australian government has paid $10m to buy four million litres of diesel fuel, as part of a strategy to establish a domestic fuel reserve. Cambridge Gulf bought the fuel from BP on behalf of the state government, and will store the fuel at its facility in Wyndham free of charge. Premier Roger Cook says the fuel will be delivered to the state’s regions that experiencing acute, localised shortages; he adds that it will support remote communities and key industries such as agriculture in particular. Energy Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson has rejected suggestions that WA is establishing its own fuel reserve because the federal system is not working for the state.

The Western Australian (WA) Government has indicated that the funding of infrastructure projects will be affected by the decline in the iron ore price, which has fallen below $US80 per tonne. Treasurer Mike Nahan says the downturn has reduced the state’s revenue by at least $A1.5bn. Nahan has also called for changes to the allocation of goods and services tax revenue among the states to ensure a fairer deal for WA

Health care spending will account for 28% of the Western Australian (WA) Government’s 2014-15 Budget, compared with 25% in 2009-10. The average cost of treatment in the state’s public hospitals is also 8% above the national figure, and WA Health Minister Kim Hames has foreshadowed two major initiatives to address the issue. Those holding private health insurance cover will be asked by staff to use it rather than rely on public funding. As well, there will be increased reliance on in-home care services, as some 30% of those in hospital do not actually need a bed. The measures are backed by the Australian Medical Association

The Western Australian (WA) Government in the state election campaign of 2013 issued advertising material that featured the slogan "fully funded, fully costed". It was often accompanied by the signature of Premier Colin Barnett, who now however claims that had not actually endorsed the pledge. The spending promises were based on expected Federal Government funding worth $A3bn that later was no longer available. Infrastructure projects such as a light rail line and a heavy rail link to Perth’s airport were deferred as a result
