Rio Tinto chairman Simon Thompson has conceded that the potential impact of climate change policy on the future value of coal assets contributed to its decision to divest its thermal coal assets in New South Wales. Rio Tinto sold the Hunter Valley coal assets for $US2.69bn ($A3.58bn) in 2017. Thompson also noted at the AGM that Rio Tinto is in the process of exiting fossil fuels completely, and he highlighted the company’s progress in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.

MCA cedes ground to BHP over climate

BHP Billiton may back down on its threat to withdraw from the Minerals Council of Australia after the lobby group released its revised climate policy. The MCA has been criticised by BHP for advocating coal-fired power generation, but its revised policy adopts a similar position to BHP regarding a "technology-neutral approach" to low-emission energy sources. Rio Tinto in turn has welcomed the MCA’s new policy stance and urged shareholders to reject resolutions to be put before its upcoming AGM by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility.

CET might not reduce power bills, says Sims

The Australian Competition & Commission has released the interim report of its inquiry into electricity prices. The report concludes that electricity network costs were the main cause of a sharp rise in electricity prices over the last decade. Meanwhile, ACCC chairman Rod Sims says that although a Clean Energy Target could potentially contribute to downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices, this might be offset by the impact of renewable energy target subsidies on electricity prices for consumers.

BHP clears the air on climate change disagreements

BHP Billiton executive Mike Henry says the resources group supports the recommendations of the Finkel Review, including the introduction of a Clean Energy Target. The head of BHP’s Australian minerals division adds that the company is of the view that reducing carbon emissions must be a key element of Australia’s energy policy, including the use of carbon capture and storage technology in coal-fired power generation. BHP’s position is at odds with that of the Minerals Council of Australia, which supports the construction of clean-coal power plants but without the use of carbon capture and storage solutions.

Electric cars accounted for just 1,200 of the more than one million new cars that were sold in Australia in 2016, The Clean Energy Finance Corporation and Macquarie Leasing are hoping to boost interest in electric cars via a $A100 million leasing program. It is hoped that their partnership will reduce transport’s 93 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by 200,000 tonnes.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull recently ruled out government funding for the construction of high-energy, low-emissions coal-fired power plants. However, he has now given indications that such a project could potentially receive a government loan via the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. Some Coalition MPs are advocating the continued use of coal as part of Australia’s energy mix, as the Government prepares to decide its stance on a proposed clean energy target.

Woodside has offshore platform lithium-ion battery breakthrough

Oil and gas producer Woodside Petroleum will reduce its energy costs and carbon emissions by installing a lithium-ion battery storage system on one of the North West Shelf’s offshore platforms. CEO Peter Coleman says Woodside considered renewable energy options before opting to replace one of the gas turbine generators on the Goodwyn offshore platform with battery storage. The battery system is expected to reduce the platform’s carbon emissions by around five per cent, and Woodside may roll out the technology at other NWS platforms if it proves to be successful.

Coal-fired power trade-off for new clean energy target

Original article by Simon Benson

With the Federal Government yet to take its amended energy policy to the Coalition partyroom, there are promising signs that gas prices are starting to come down. The Government has been able to get the Council of Australian Governments to agree to all but one of the Finkel energy review’s 50 recommendations, namely that of a clean energy target. It is believed that Energy Minister Josh Frydenberg and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull are willing to give a commitment to investing in "clean coal"-fired power plants in order to get the partyroom to approve a CET.

Coal plants hold key to ‘cheap energy, CO2 cuts’

Engineers from GE argue that it would cost between $A57m and $A114m to retrofit Australia’s existing coal-fired power stations to produce more electricity and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. They estimate that these plant could generate an additional 1,000MW to 1,500MW while cutting their carbon emissions by about 19 million tonnes. Australia’s remaining coal-fired power stations are slated for closure by 2050.

Gorgon to make case for carbon capture

Original article by Angela Macdonald-Smith
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 20 : 22-Jun-17

Global Carbon Capture & Storage Institute CEO Brad Page says Chevron’s Gorgon LNG project will prove the business case for carbon capture and storage technology. The CCS component of the Gorgon project will reduce Gorgon’s greenhouse gas emissions by around 40 per cent by using a saline aquifer to store carbon dioxide. Page notes that the estimated $A2bn cost of the CCS project is insignificant compared with the overall cost of Gorgon, which has blown out from $US37bn to $US54bn.
