Iron ore exports from the Pilbara may potentially be disrupted by Tropical Cyclone Joyce. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the cyclone could hit the region on 13 January. The towns of Tom Price and Newman are likely to be within its trajectory, although it may miss the Port of Hedland. However, the Pilbara Ports Authority has ordered all vessels to leave the port, which is used by iron ore miners such as Fortescue Metals Group. The price of iron ore for delivery to the Chinese port of Dalian rose on 11 January in response to concerns about the cyclone.

DP World has decided not to lock out more than 200 members of the Maritime Union of Australia, who will now be able to attend a stopwork meeting on 31 July 2014. The stevedoring group and the union are engaged in a dispute over the new enterprise bargaining agreement. The union intends to exert pressure on the company by announcing a four-hour stopwork and work bans. The two parties will meet again on 1 August

New rule could prevent strike

Unlike other states, Western Australia (WA) did not refer its industrial relations powers to the Commonwealth. However, Federal Employment Minister Eric Abetz has now launched an amendment by regulation rather than legislation to the Fair Work Act, to enable third parties to appear in federal industrial relations cases. This will allow the WA Government as well as iron ore exporters BHP Billiton and Fortescue Metals to ask Fair Work Australia for a halt to strikes at Port Hedland. Deckhands represented by the Maritime Union of Australia are threatening industrial action against Teekay Shipping at the port
