Tabcorp estimates that about $A95m was wagered on the 2016 Melbourne Cup via its TAB outlets in Victoria and New South Wales. Meanwhile, Sportsbet is said to have taken about $A25m worth of bets on the race, compared with $A20m in 2015. It paid out $A13.6m to punters who backed Cup winner Almandin. One Sportsbet customer won $A241,000 on a $A10 bet after correctly picking the first four horses to pass the winning post.

Racing Victoria bets on Seven deal

Racing Victoria is expected to post a net profit of at least $A15m for the 2014-15 financial year. Meanwhile, the racing body does not expect revenue to be unduly affected by Tabcorp’s decision to end Sky Channel’s coverage of Victorian horse races from mid-June 2015. Seven West Media is in talks with Racing Victoria to launch a dedicated racing channel.

The owners of German horse "Protectionist" on 4 November 2014 received $A3.6m in prize money for winning the Emirates Melbourne Cup, in the fastest time for a dozen years. "Red Cadeaux" came second and gained the owners $A1.08m. The event overall was marred by two deaths, with pre-race favourite "Admire Rakti" collapsing after finishing last and "Araldo" needing to be destroyed after kicking a fence and breaking a leg. Bets placed with gaming groups Tabcorp, Tatts Group and Sportsbet were worth a combined $A166m
