New home approvals slow for fourth month

New figures show that a total of 232,194 new dwellings were approved across Australia in the year to February 2016, compared with 234,002 in the year to January. A total of 115,115 apartments, townhouses and semi-detached dwellings were approved in the year to February, after peaking at 120,953 in the year to October 2015.

Construction outlook good says HIA

A new report from the Housing Industry Association forecasts that total dwelling starts across Australia will exceed 200,000 in 2015-16. Chief economist Harley Dale says the residential construction market is set to remain buoyant for the next 12-18 months. Dale expects further growth in New South Wales housing starts in 2015, followed by a downturn in the following two years, while housing starts are tipped to fall in Victoria in the current year and the next two years.

Housing glut by 2018, BIS report warns

A BIS Shrapnel report forecasts an oversupply of at least 12,000 dwellings in Australia by 2018. The firm expects just 164,000 new homes to be built in 2018, compared with an estimated 210,000 in 2014-15. However, demand for housing in New South Wales will continue to exceed supply in coming years, while there will be an oversupply of apartments in Victoria and houses in Western Australia.

Housing starts top 200,000 for first time

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has reported that there were a record 203,760 dwelling commencements in the year to March 2015. This compares with 198,849 in the year to December 2014. Housing starts in Victoria and Queensland rose by around 20 per cent during the March quarter, although growth in New South Wales was just 1.9 per cent. The value of construction activity across all sectors of the industry totalled $A23.7 billion during the quarter.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 6.8 per cent of Australians aged +14 intend to buy or build a residential property in the next year. The survey, which was carried out in the year to March 2015, also shows that 9.8 per cent of Perth residents intend to buy or build a new or established house or apartment in the next year, ahead of Melburnians (9.3 per cent) and Sydneysiders (7.8 per cent). Just 3.5 per cent of Hobart residents intend to buy or build in the next 12 months.

Another 9m homes needed by 2055

The Australian Government’s Intergenerational Report forecasts that the nation’s population will top 39.7 million in 2055. This will require the construction of an additional nine million residential dwellings over the next four decades. Graham Wolfe of the Housing Industry Association has called for government action to make more land available for residential development and measures to improve the planning process

Home and apartment building hits record $54.4b in 2014

New figures show that $A54.4bn worth of residential dwellings were built across Australia during 2014, compared with $A49.3bn in 2013. Dwelling commencements in the December 2014 quarter topped $A14.3bn, an increase of 12.3 per cent. Non-residential construction activity rose by 1.3 per cent to $A35bn in 2014, although there was 2.9 per cent contraction in the fourth quarter
