Consumer electronics retailer JB Hi-Fi will open its first ‘Express’ store in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct on 26 November. CEO Richard Murray says the 68sq m store will target cash and carry buyers who want to make small purchases. JB Hi-Fi is capitalising on the growing trend toward small-format retail stores, with plans to open more stores in airports and office towers that are similar in size to the 250sq outlet at Sydney Airport’s international terminal. Furniture and consumer electronics retailer Harvey Norman incurred a "first strike" against its remuneration report at its AGM on 27 November. It will face a board spill in 2019 if a sufficient number of shareholders vote down the remuneration report again. Chairman Garry Harvey was not very happy about those who have criticised it over various issues, including the independence of its directors and loans to franchisees. Commenting on its share price, which has by fallen 22 per cent in 2018, Harvey said it presents a good opportunity for Harvey Norman to be privatised.

Online retailer Kogan.com aims to begin selling whitegoods and large kitchen appliances by the end of 2018. Founder and CEO Ruslan Kogan says the logistics aspects associated with the sale of such bulky items has made the whitegoods retail sector relatively immune to the challenges posed by online retailers, but he says it is "ripe for the picking". News of Kogan.com’s foray into whitegoods saw shares in established whitegoods retailers decline on 4 June, with Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi down 2.8 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 14 : 8-Dec-15

Shares in Dick Smith Holdings (DSH) closed at $A0.36 on 7 December 2015, after reaching a low of $A0.20 in the previous week. The household electronics retailer’s stock was issued at $A2.20 in a $A520m IPO in 2013. Businessman Dick Smith says investors should not be surprised by the slump, noting that Woolworths has sold DSH for just $A94m only one year before the float. However, Smith is confident that the fortunes of the company he founded in 1968 can be revived.
