Trade Minister Don Farrell has come under fire for incorrectly claiming that US President Donald Trump had raised Australia’s ban on US beef imports in a conversation with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Albanese has come out in defence of Farrell, who now says he confused comments made by Trump in the White House rose garden about Australia with a conversation between Trump and Albanese. The federal government has now lifted restrictions on US beef derived from cattle raised in Canada and Mexico being imported into Australia, with the Coalition calling for an inquiry into the decision.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Jones disagree on product labelling rules. Joyce believes that stricter rules are necessary to protect consumers from health hazards. At least 11 Australians have contracted hepatitis after eating imported Chinese berries. Abbott opposes new regulations because they would lead to a greater bureaucratic burden for companies and higher prices for consumers

The Australian Government will soon review the Motor Vehicle Standards Act, and Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane says it will take on board a recommendation by the Productivity Commission to liberalise the market for "grey" imports. A duty of $A12,000 on used cars sourced from overseas may be scrapped, and consumers could be able to save $A2.6bn annually by buying comparable models brought in from countries such as Japan and the UK. The automobile industry is opposed to the plans
