The Chinese province of Hebei will reduce its iron and steel production by 10 million tonnes and eight million tonnes respectively in 2016. Hebei accounts for about 25 per cent of the nation’s iron and steel production, as well as the bulk of the iron ore exported from Australia to mainland China. The production cutbacks have been attributed to factors such as an oversupply and an attempt to address the issue of pollution in China.

The price of iron ore for delivery to the port of Qingdao in China has fallen by 0.83 per cent to $US47.74 per tonne. This is the steel input’s lowest level since early July, when it reached a low of $US44.59 per tonne. Analysts expect a further downturn in China’s demand for iron ore as its economic growth slows and infrastructure development winds down.

Woodside Petroleum’s Chinese customers have accused the Australian company and its partners of delaying LNG shipments. The Chinese side claims that the North West Shelf Gas consortium is holding back gas in an attempt to force the clients to renegotiate the terms of a deal signed in 2002 and raise the price. At an investor briefing in August 2014, Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said the contract was running at a "cash loss"
