The first shipment of thermal coal from Adani’s controversial Carmichael mine in Queensland is expected to leave the Abbot Point terminal within weeks. The India-based company, whose Australian mining division trades as Bravus Mining & Resources, has begun test runs on the 206km rail link from the mine to Abbot Point. However, anti-coal activists have been targeting the rail link ahead of the first shipment, prompting Bravus to urge the state government to introduce harsher penalties for activists whose conduct puts themselves and others at risk.

Stop demonising us, says Adani chief

Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow has called for the "demonisation" of its controversial Carmichael coal mining project in Queensland to end. Adani announced in the week ending 30 November that the project will finally go ahead, albeit on a much reduced scale, and that it will be self-funded. Dow says Adani accepts that some people are against the Carmichael project, but the debate about it proceeding or not should be based around facts, not "myths, half-truths and deceptions". He says Adani is sick of being used as a "political football".

India-based Adani will commence construction work on the Carmichael thermal coal project in Queensland’s Galilee Basin before the end of 2018. The mine and associated rail infrastructure is slated to cost less than $2bn, compared with initial expectations of $16.5bn. The scale of the project has been pared back from 60 million tonnes per annum to just 10 million in its first year, although this will gradually increase to 27.5 million tonnes. Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane says that up to five other coal projects in the basin could now proceed.

Adani’s cut-price Carmichael coal

Adani recently gave indications that thermal coal from its Carmichael mine in Queensland is likely to boast energy content of around 5,500 kilocalories per kilogram. Rory Simington of Wood Mackenzie estimates that if the coal were offered to buyers at current market prices, it would be likely to fetch between $US50 and $U55 per tonne. This compares with $US106 per tonne at present for higher-grade coal from the Hunter Valley. Simington expects Adani’s coal to have an energy content of 4,800 kilocalories per kilogram, although he adds that washing the coal could increase this to around 5,500 kilocalories.

Adani Mining CEO Lucas Dow has declined to comment on speculation that the company will make a final investment decision on the Carmichael thermal coal mine in coming weeks. However, Adani is believed to be planning for annual production of 10-15 million tonnes in the first stage of the project, at a cost of less $2bn. The mine is now expected to have maximum production capacity of about 27 million tonnes a year, compared with initial plans for 60 million tonnes. The project is forecast to generate 1,500 jobs.

India-based Adani will start generating renewable energy in Australia later in 2018, when the first stage of its Rugby Run solar farm in Queensland begins operating. It is part of a push by the coal miner to have 1,500 megawatts of renewable energy capacity in Australia by 2022. Adani has indicated that it could invest in other renewables in Australia, such as pumped hydro and wind power, while it may also invest in renewable energy production in Western Australia. Rugby Run has a long-term supply contract with Alinta Energy.

Critics won’t stop Carmichael coal mine: Adani Australia boss Jeyakumar Janakaraj

Original article by Mark Ludlow
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 12-Mar-18

Adani Australia CEO Jeyakumar Janakaraj has attacked the amount of misinformation being spread by opponents of its proposed $A16.5 billion Carmichael coal mine. He notes that the mine has already secured over 100 approvals, and that Australia’s investment reputation would be at risk if a future government scrapped a project that had already secured appropriate government approvals. Janakaraj noted that forecast strong global energy demand over the next two decades made the Carmichael mine an economically viable project.

Adani aims to finalising funding for the first stage of the $A16.5bn Carmichael coal project in December 2017. Adani still hopes to partially fill a $A3.3bn funding deficit via a concessional loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. Resources Minister Matthew Canavan says the NAIF’s board is not expected to make a decision on the loan until the end of the year. Wood Mackenzie estimates that the thermal coal price will need to average $U82 per tonne – compared with $US74 at present – for the first stage of the Carmichael project to achieve a 15 per cent rate of return.

Turnbull turns up heat on Shorten over Adani loan

Original article by Joe Kelly

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten still opposes granting Adani a concessional loan from the Northern Australian Infrastructure Facility to build a rail line associated with its Carmichael coal project. He notes that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull indicated in 2016 that the project would not receive financial support from taxpayers. Resources Minister Matt Canavan has also criticised Labor counterpart Jason Clare for claiming that Adani would have exclusive access to the rail line. Canavan says that several other coal miners would benefit from the rail line.

Adani mine has huge economic benefits: Turnbull

Original article by David Crowe
The Australian – Page: 4 : 12-Apr-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has highlighted the proposed Carmichael coal mine’s likely contribution to jobs growth and government revenue. Turnbull has held talks with Indian entrepreneur Gautam Adani, who believes that the project qualifies for funding from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility. However, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says the Carmichael coal mine and rail project needs to be commercially and economically viable, and it should not receive financial assistance from taxpayers.
