The push to reunionise the Pilbara has received a boost after BHP agreed to commence enterprise bargaining negotiations for electrical workers at its mines in Western Australia. The Electrical Trades Union’s state branch says BHP’s decision to formally concede that a majority of its power workers want an enterprise agreement is a "massive win". The ETU has submitted a separate application to the Fair Work Commission for an order requiring BHP to bargain on behalf of its rail signal technicians in WA. Unions are also targeting rival iron ore producers Rio Tinto and Mineral Resources.

BHP has averted industrial action after agreeing to a new pay deal with its iron ore train drivers in the Pilbara that will see their base salary rise to more than $300,000 over the next four years. The in-principle agreement with the Mining & Energy Union includes an immediate pay rise of four per cent, followed by four annual increases of four per cent. The train drivers will also receive two retention bonuses of $20,000; the first will be paid immediately, with the second to be paid in 12 months’ time. The protected industrial action that was slated to disrupt iron ore rail shipments to Port Hedland from Friday will no longer proceed.

BHP’s train drivers to strike

BHP’s iron ore shipments from the Pilbara are set to be disrupted after 97 per cent of train drivers who are members of the Mining & Energy Union voted in favour of industrial action. The union has organised a 24-hour strike on Friday as part of negotiations for a new enterprise agreement. The train drivers rejected a proposed agreement in December, and BHP’s Warren Wellbeloved says it was a " fair and generous offer". The strike will be the first since 2008 in the Pilbara’s iron ore industry, which is largely deunionised.

Construction group Multiplex has reached a deal on a new enterprise agreement for its Western Australian workers who are members of the CFMEU. The new agreement includes a pay rise of 25 per cent over four years, comprising an immediate increase of 10 per cent and followed by three annual pay rises of five per cent. Zach Smith, the national secretary of the CFMEU’s construction division, rejects suggestions that the wage deal will be inflationary. Industrial action at Multiplex sites in WA that was scheduled for this week has been cancelled in the wake of the pay deal.

BHP’s iron ore operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region face disruption due to industrial action by train drivers from Friday. Almost 400 train drivers who are members of the Mining & Energy Union are set to impose bans on the use of BHP’s mobile rostering app, as part of the long-running negotiations for a new enterprise agreement. A BHP spokesman has stated that the company has put forward "a good and comprehensive offer" which recognises the important contribution that the rail team makes to its iron ore business. It will be the first protected industrial action in the Pilbara since 2008. Meanwhile, the MEU’s demerger from the CFMEU will formally take effect from 1 December.

Union readies for new tug of war with BHP

Iron ore shipments from Port Hedland could potentially be disrupted due to the Australian Institute of Marine & Power Engineers’ proposed legal action against BHP Billiton. Rivtow, which provides tugboat services to BHP at Port Hedland, operates on a partnership model. However, the company is believed to have begun employing marine engineers on some of its tugboats, which the AIMPE claims would give it access under workplace right of entry laws.

The Fair Work Commission has given the green light for unions to hold a ballot of Gorgon LNG workers, prompting concerns that strike action will lead to further delays in completing the $US54bn ($A73bn) project. The protected ballot of CB&I employees follows the failure of negotiations over a new enterprise agreement. Chevron anticipates that exports from the Gorgon venture will commence by the end of 2015.
