CFMEU safety breaches ‘neither isolated nor minor’

The construction union has been taken to court for failing to observe safety rules. Fair Work Building & Construction (FWBC) alleged in the Federal Circuit Court that union officials from the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union breached the safety rules on numerous occasions. FWBC director Nigel Hadgkiss will talk about the case at a safety conference on 17 September 2015.

Call for review of safety laws

The Council of Australian Governments in 2008 announced a push to streamline workplace health and safety legislation nationally. However the state governments in Victoria and Western Australia have still not joined the framework in 2014, and the Business Council of Australia has now commented on the issue. In a submission lodged with the Federal Department of Employment, the employer body argues the model laws should be watered down in order to persuade all states to adopt them. The Master Builders Australia lobby group had also recently called for reform of the laws

CASA crackdown threatens to ground colour blind pilots

Australian senator David Fawcett of the Liberal Party wants Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss to intervene after a move by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority. It has contacted some 500 licensed pilots whose medical certificates indicate they failed colour perception tests. The watchdog is warning them of a possible tightening of regulations, and among those affected are 124 commercial pilots at carriers such as Virgin Australia. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal had ruled over two decades ago that colour blind pilots can still operate as co-pilots on passenger flights
