The Minerals Council of Australia has expressed concern about key elements of the federal government’s proposed critical minerals production tax incentive scheme. The MCA contends that the ‘community benefit principles’ requirement of the tax incentive would create uncertainty for the nation’s critical minerals industry, which is already facing strong global competition. The government estimates that the tax incentive will cost about $7bn over a decade, but create secure jobs in Australia and diversify global supply chains by processing critical minerals onshore rather than exporting the raw materials overseas.

The Australia Institute of Company Directors has released a new guidebook on artificial intelligence technology. Amongst other things, it advises company directors to examine the potential benefits and key risks associated with using AI within their organisation, while they should take action to ensure that the data that is being used by their company’s AI applications is ‘fit for purpose’. The AICD’s Mark Rigotti says directors may face significant commercial, reputational and regulatory damage if they lack sufficient oversight regarding the company’ use of AI.

The Foundation for a Smoke Free World was launched in 2017; it has financed more than 70 academic papers on topics such as e-cigarettes, heated tobacco products and rates of smoking cessation over the last five years. Some of this research has produced positive findings about e-cigarettes and vaping, and many of the research papers have been cited by other researchers hundreds of times. However, some of this research does not disclose that the foundation is solely funded by tobacco giant Philip Morris, which revealed plans to expand into e-cigarettes in 2013. A spokeswoman has indicated that the foundation operate independently of Philip Morris.

Former Business Council of Australia president Graham Bradley says that "anti-business rhetoric" within government is having a negative impact on the economy and deterring capital investment. He has also criticised the federal government for aligning itself with small and medium business and denigrating big business. Meanwhile, Australian Investment Council CEO Yasser El-Ansary says weak consumer confidence is deterring companies from investing, adding that the BCA’s proposal to include a business investment allowance in the May 2020 Budget would only provide a short-term economic stimulus.

A second activist group, the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility, will table resolutions at the upcoming AGMs of NAB and ANZ, calling on them to withdraw from industry groups whose advocacy stances are at odds with the Paris climate goals. BHP to review membership of coal lobby

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 23 : 6-Sep-19

BHP says the latest review of its membership of industry associations will include Coal21, which has links to the Minerals Council of Australia. The resources giant is under growing pressure to sever its links with pro-coal lobbyists, but it has recommended that shareholders vote against a resolution calling for it to cancel its membership of the MCA due to the latter’s stance on climate change. Meanwhile, CFO Peter Beaven says BHP would be open to selling its coal assets at the right price; he adds that a decision on a proposed brownfield expansion of the Olympic Dam copper mine may be delayed until 2022.
