The legal dispute over a stake in the SNE oilfield in Senegal was a key issue on the agenda at FAR Limited’s 2018 AGM. Chairman Nic Limb told shareholders that the company will have the right to buy a 35 per cent stake in the oilfield at the same price that Woodside Petroleum paid for it if an arbitration court rules in FAR’s favour. He has also not ruled out seeking a partner to buy the stake if Woodside’s deal with ConocoPhillips is overturned. A Woodside spokeswoman has described the arbitration as "frivolous" and without merit.

Australia is ranked 21st in the World Economic Forum’s 2015-16 Global Competitiveness report, compared with 22nd position previously. However, the nation is ranked 26th in terms of innovation and 36th for labour market flexibility. Australian Industry Group CEO Innes Willox says the report demonstrates the need for government policy to focus on areas such as innovation, workplace relations and taxation. Switzerland and Singapore are the two most competitive nations, according to the report.

The latest IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook rates Australia in 18th position in terms of its global competitiveness. The nation was ranked 17th in 2014, but it has been overtaken by New Zealand, which has moved from 20th place to 17th. Australia has also lost ground in the global rankings on the measures of infrastructure, economic performance, international investment and efficiency of government.
