NBN win could cost TPG sales

New restrictions on companies building fast broadband networks have resulted in TPG Telecom stopping sales of its superfast broadband plan. Australian Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the extra restrictions on 14 December 2014. His motivation was to protect the interests of the national broadband network operator, NBN Co. TPG stated on 5 January 2015 that the company was unable to meet the new requirements and that consequently new orders for the service will not be accepted

iiNet to tackle Optus, Telstra for NSW growth

Optus lines up new content bundles

Second-ranked Australian telco Singtel Optus has posted a rise in underlying net profit of 7.4% to $A417m in the half-year ending 30 September 2014. The mobile telephony division boosted its revenue 1.1% to $A2.7bn. However it suffered a drop of 92,000 in subscriber numbers, while there was also one of 207,000 in the mobile broadband segment. CEO Allen Lew says Optus will soon roll out new bundled deals with content providers, to reverse the under-performance of its fixed-broadband operation

PwC enlisted to count cost of metadata laws

The Australian Government aims to soon pass new laws that will force telcos and ISPs to store metadata for 24 months, to boost national security. It has now emerged that a study has been commissioned from PricewaterhouseCoopers by the Attorney-General’s Department, of the projected cost burden for the sector that will be created by the implementation of the necessary IT solutions. It follows the release of a discussion paper by Attorney-General George Brandis and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, which examines options for combating the problem of internet piracy.
