Nine Entertainment Company is expected to use its "upfronts" event to reveal that it will introduce live streaming of its three TV channels. WIN Corporation CEO Andrew Lancaster and Prime Media chairman John Hartigan say the move by metropolitan networks to offer live streaming across Australia demonstrates the need to abolish the "reach rule". Seven West Media will commence live streaming of its channels in early November 2015.

Households ‘slow’ in linking TVs to net

Original article by Michael Bodey
The Australian – Page: 23 : 12-Oct-15

Nine Entertainment Company’s Peter Wiltshire believes that only about one per cent of Australians are using their Smart TV to access the internet. Along with the low-take-up rate of Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV – which was officially launched in Australia in mid-2014 – Wiltshire notes that the online catch-up services of free-to-air networks are not competing effectively with subscriber video-on-demand providers such as Netflix.

Netflix claims its first victim as EzyFlix bites the dust

Original article by Yolanda Redrup
The Australian Financial Review – Page: online : 20-Aug-15

Netflix, the newest entrant to the Australian TV and movie streaming market, has claimed its first victim with Australian-based Ezyflix closing this week. Ezyflix’s model of charging per download for films and TV shows rather than using a monthly subscription-based model like Netflix, Quickflix, Presto and Stan appears to have made Ezyflix price uncompetitive with its rivals. The latest Roy Morgan Research survey shows Netflix now reaches 1.89 million Australians in July, stunning growth considering Netflix only launched in Australia four months earlier in March.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 1.89 million Australians aged 14+ in 737,000 households had a Netflix subscription in July 2015. Netflix has experienced strong growth in subscriptions, considering that it had 748,000 subscribers in April, 1.16 million in May and 1.53 million in June. Foxtel’s share of the pay/subscription TV market has declined to 76 per cent, although the size of its customer base remains almost unchanged (2,346,000). The total pay/subscription market has expanded almost 30 per cent since the start of 2015.

Shares in Quickflix were suspended from trading at $A0.002 on 30 July 2015, ahead of an announcement on a possible deal with an offshore group. Quickflix did not specify whether it is the potential target or the acquirer, but the trading halt has prompted speculation that the video-on-demand and DVD rental group will be taken over. It is estimated that Australia’s streaming video industry boasts about two million subscribers.

Telstra will launch the Roku 2 video streaming device in Australia later in 2015. It will allow subscribers to video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Presto to view them on a TV. The new Telstra TV service will be pitched at consumers who do not have pay-TV, and Telstra is confident that it will have no impact on the customer base of Foxtel, in which the telco has a 50 per cent stake. Roku 2 is already widely used in countries such as the US and the UK, and competes with similar products from Google and Apple.

The latest five-year deals for Australian Football League and National Rugby League broadcasting rights are expected to fetch between $A1.5bn and $A2bn. Both codes are believed to have held talks with digital companies and online steaming services. However, companies such as Google and Netflix are expected to partner with traditional media companies to offer content rather than providing live streaming of matches themselves. Singtel Optus is also keen to secure digital broadcasting rights.

Original article by Paul McIntyre

Foxtel’s MCN advertising business will assume responsibility for selling ads on the Ten Network in September 2015. Ten CEO Hamish McLennan says global internet companies such as Google present a major threat to Australian TV broadcasters, and warns that they could soon be competing with traditional media companies for sports broadcasting rights. MCN CEO Anthony Fitzgerald adds that there is a need to redefine TV as consumers are now watching broadcast-quality video on a range of devices.
