Victor Gomes of UBS says any economic slowdown in Australia means small-capitalisation stocks with significant offshore earnings are likely to perform well. Large-cap stocks have outperformed in recent years, and some small-caps were heavily sold down during the February 2017 reporting season. Robert Talevski of Activus Investment Advisors says investors need to focus on the long-term investment horizon when buying into small-caps.

Original article by Jessica Sier
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 25 : 12-Jan-17

There are a number of market thresholds that Australian investors should take into account when determining their portfolio strategy for 2017. These include the 20,000-point level for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and 6,000 points for Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200, parity between the US dollar and the euro, $US60 a barrel for crude oil and a US bond yield of 2.6 per cent.

Bullish Goldman likes resources

Investment bank Goldman Sachs is upbeat about the outlook for the Australian sharemarket in 2017, noting indications that the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 is experiencing an earnings upgrade cycle. Goldman Sachs expects market trends that have emerged toward the end of 2016 to continue in 2017, albeit at a slower pace. The firm has adopted an "overweight" position with regard to banking, resources and cyclical stocks, while it remains bearish about so-called bond proxy stocks.

Blue chip stocks have been in favour with Australian investors in recent weeks, amid a trend to offload growth stocks. The 20 largest stocks in particular have generally performed well since the start of October 2016, and Macquarie Group expects this trend to be sustained into 2017. However, Tony Brennan of Citigroup cautions that blue chip stocks in some sectors may not perform as well as others.

Value investing has fallen out of favour in recent years, but the August 2016 reporting season was a catalyst for renewed interest in value stocks. Stephen Bruce, a portfolio manager at Perennial, says stocks that have been dubbed "expensive defensives" began to be sold down in the wake of the reporting season, while value stocks received support due to financial results that were better than expected. Bruce and colleague John Murray identify BHP Billiton, QBE Insurance Group, AMP, Lend Lease and Macquarie Group as their top picks among value stocks.

Australian-listed small-capitalisation stocks have outperformed the broader sharemarket over the last 18 months or so. However, this outperformance has been reversed in the last month, and particularly in the wake of Donald Trump’s presidential election win. There has been renewed support for bank and resources stocks, due to factors such as a rise in government bond yields and commodity prices.

Credit won’t predict next crisis, but gives protection

Original article by Jonathan Shapiro
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 17 : 7-Nov-16

Alexander Funds Management MD Chris Black notes that credit markets anticipated the global financial crisis well before equity markets. He says the GFC was primarily a credit-driven event, but this will not be the case with the next financial market crash. He adds that credit will be a safer asset class when the next financial market downturn comes. Alexander Funds has delivered a return of 16.64 per cent since it was founded as Laminar in 2009, but Black cautions that investors should not expect returns similar to those in the years immediately after the GFC.

Inghams Group’s listing on the Australian sharemarket on 7 November is likely to be closely scrutinised by investors after the IPO had to be repriced. The stock has been issued at $A3.15 per share, compared with initial hopes of between $A3.57 to $A4.14. Bravura Solutions and the Charter Hall Long WALE REIT have also been forced to scale back the issue price of their stock. Some fund managers note that investor sentiment has changed in recent weeks, particularly with regard to IPOs.

Sovereign debt could well be the driver of the next share selloff

Australia’s benchmark S&P ASX 200 is currently trading on a forward price-earnings ratio of around 16 times, compared with its long-term average of about 14.5 times. The index reached a 2016 high of 5,587 points at the start of August, and despite a number of pullbacks it is still three per cent higher than at the start of the year. However, the prospect of an eventual end to quantitative easing by central banks is likely to put upward pressure on government bond yields, which will in turn weigh on sentiment toward equities.

Why Commonwealth is still the investors’ favourite, 25 years on

Original article by James Frost
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 18 : 13-Sep-16

The first tranche of Commonwealth Bank shares were issued at $A5.40 apiece in September 1991. Investors who took up the minimum of 400 shares in the float and reinvested their dividends over the following 25 years would now hold $A131,371 worth of shares in Australia’s largest bank. Financial market observers note that the first stage of the Commonwealth Bank privatisation was popular with investors, despite the challenging economic conditions at the time.
