The post-election reconfiguration of the Australian parliament could affect the sale of S. Kidman & Company. Dakang Australia Holdings is expected to try again to buy Kidman, after its acquisition proposal was rejected by Treasurer Scott Morrison. Senators Adam Bandt, Pauline Hanson, Nick Xenophon and Bob Katter are likely to oppose the sale of Kidman to foreigners.

It’s a big short-term buying opportunity

Original article by Jessica Sier

Charles de Bolssezon of Societe Generale forecasts that the FTSE 100 will rally in coming months if the UK votes to remain in the European Union. However, the FTSE is tipped to shed about 15 per cent if Britons vote to leave the EU, while the S&P 500 will fall by 10 per cent. Richard Coppleson of Bell Potter says Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 would also fall sharply in the event of a "Brexit", but he adds that this would create buying opportunities for investors in the short-term.

Chinese deal with Vale can cut BHP both ways

A Bloomberg report has suggested that Vale could seek to raise up to $US7bn by selling a minority stake in its iron ore assets to Asian investors, most likely from China. On one hand, BHP Billiton would welcome such a deal, as its Samarco iron ore joint venture with Vale must renegotiate US3.8bn worth of debt, while Vale’s own debt pile totals $US23bn. On the other hand, Vale’s strategic investor may have a vested interest in trying to push the iron ore price down, particularly if they are also a buyer of iron ore.

InterOil’s former CEO Phil Mulacek has failed in his bid for a board spill, although he received a high level of support at the takeover target’s 2016 AGM. Some 31 per cent of votes cast backed his stance, and Oil Search’s $US2.2bn takeover bid will fail if 33 per cent of InterOil shareholders vote against it on 28 July. Oil Search CEO Peter Botten intends to hold further meetings with InterOil’s shareholders in the lead-up to the vote.

Takeover target InterOil has advised that its annual meeting will proceed on 14 June 2016, after a court dismissed an application by ex-CEO Phil Mulacek to have it delayed. Shareholders will vote on Mulacek’s push for a board spill. He opposes a $US2.2 billion ($A3bn) bid for the company by Australian-listed Oil Search, arguing that the offer undervalues InterOil. The majority of institutional investors are believed to support the bid.

The Australian Labor Party’s proposal to increase the threshold for offshore investment in agricultural land has been criticised by Treasurer Scott Morrison. Labor would require purchases of farmland valued at $A50m or more to be approved by the Foreign Investment Review Board, but Morrison contends that offshore buyers would seek to avoid this by acquiring land for $A49m. Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce has also criticised Labor’s proposal to lift the threshold for foreign investment in the agribusiness sector to $A1bn.

Original article by Sue Neales
The Australian – Page: 21 : 9-Jun-16

Chinese-backed Rifa Australia has acquired 14 farms in Australia in the last two years, and it is seeking approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board to acquire an additional six properties. However, Rifa’s David Goodfellow says the company has been advised that the FIRB will not resume processing applications until late July 2016. He says investors are concerned that there will be further changes to regulations governing offshore investment in the agricultural sector if the Coalition wins the federal election.
