Liberal senator Jim Molan says President Donald Trump has made a serious mistake in deciding to withdraw all remaining US troops from Syria. Australia was one of few allies of the US to be informed of the decision before it was formally announced. Britain’s Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood has also expressed concern about the decision, warning that Islamic State is still a threat despite Trump’s claims that it has been defeated in Syria. The withdrawal of US troops from Syria had been part of Trump’s 2016 presidential election campaign platform.

Security has been boosted at Australian airports following the arrest of four men in Sydney on 30 July 2017. The four men, who are believed to be related, are suspected of plotting to bring down an aircraft by setting off a device that would have filled the plane with poisonous gas. It is understood that the arrests followed the receipt of information from a foreign intelligence service, and that the suspects were being assisted by Islamic State terrorists in Syria.

Global sharemarkets are expected to be heavily sold down on 16 November 2015, as investors opt for lower-risk assets in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris. Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 closed at 5,051.25 on 13 November, and futures markets had already anticipated a fall below the 5,000-point level prior to the terrorist attacks. AMP Capital’s Shane Oliver does expect any downturn in the Australian market to be sustained, although he says resources stocks are likely to fall further.

A legal hurdle has emerged to the plan of the Australian Government to prevent any citizens who have fought with Jihadist terrorist groups oversees from returning home. Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has conceded that the majority of the current 150 or so cases do not involve people with dual nationality. They therefore cannot simply be left stateless by revoking their Australian citizenship. Meanwhile Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has foreshadowed new counter-terrorism laws that will boost the powers of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service
