The interim report of an independent review of the ABC’s ‘fake audio’ scandal has concluded that there is no evidence that the public broadcaster’s employees had any intention to mislead audiences by doctoring the Afghanistan footage. However, director of news Justin Stevens has released a statement on the ABC’s website in which he says the broadcaster "sincerely regrets and apologises" for the editing errors which resulted in additional gunshots being added to the video footage of an Australian military operation in Afghanistan. Stevens also said the video editor who had worked on the stories has left the ABC.

The Nine Network’s chief political editor Chris Uhlmann says he would never reveal his sources, while the Seven Network’s chief political reporter Mark Riley stresses that there can be no exceptions to the Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance’s Journalist Code of Ethics.

The Seven Network’s Bruce McWilliam has expressed concern about the broader implications of a proposal for the inquest into the death of cricketer Phillip Hughes to scrutinise media coverage of the tragedy. He warns that this would give coroners greater power to regulate the reporting of incidents in which people died. The Ten Network’s senior litigation counsel, Tasha Smithies, says it is not appropriate for issues such as breaches of privacy to be handled by a coronial inquest.

ABC, SBS making ‘noise’ to compete

Australia’s public broadcasters, the SBS and ABC, are ratings-driven despite reassurances to the contrary. They recently tried to use terrorist sympathiser Zaky Mallah to increase their ratings which was an exercise in cynicism. ABC MD Mark Scott keeps saying that the public broadcaster does not need to seek higher ratings but this is just rhetoric.
