Western Australian Opposition Leader Mark McGowan wants the views of tourism organisations to be considered in assessing applications for liquor licences. McGowan says outdated regulations affecting the hospitality industry should be scrapped, and he intends to pursue reforms to the Liquor Control Act if the Australian Labor Party wins the next state election

Crown land a ‘big fire risk’

Western Australia’s Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades wants Crown land to be subject to the same laws regarding the mitigation of fire risks as privately-owned land. Association vice-president Dave Gossage notes that at present the penalties for private landowners do not apply to land that is managed by federal, state and local governments. Some 92 per cent of land in the state is Crown land

WA plan allows use of dead man’s sperm

The Western Australian Government plans to introduce reforms which will allow sperm to be used posthumously to enable a dead man’s partner to conceive. However, Health Minister Kim Hames has indicated that use of harvested sperm will only be permitted if the man gave permission to do so before his death. Heat is on for tanning beds ban

Terry Slevin of the Cancer Council Western Australia and Michael Gannon of the Australian Medical Association have urged the State Government to ban commercial tanning beds. Slevin notes that the state is the only jurisdiction in Australia that has not yet imposed a ban. Health Minister Kim Hanes believes that the health concerns about sun beds justifies a ban, but he says the Government has not made a final decision on the issue

Disabled bay penalty $2000

The Western Australian Govenment will crack down on motorists who use parking spaces that are reserved for drivers with disabilities. At present the maximum fine for using disabled parking bays without a permit is $A140, but this will be increased to $A300. However, disability advocates believe that more severe on-the-spot fines are justified. Courts will be able to impose fines of $A2,000 under the reforms, compared with $A1,000 at present
