Turnbull tops leader vote

A national Fairfax/Ipsos poll shows that 24 per cent of voters prefer Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal leader, ahead of Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop. The poll, which was carried out from 30 October to 1 November 2014, found that Turnbull is also the preferred Liberal leader for 48 per cent of Australian Labor Party supporters. Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten is the preferred Labor leader for 30 per cent of voters

Coalition flags despite carbon repeal

Support for the Australian Government is now just 46 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, according to the latest poll by "The Australian Financial Review" and Nielsen. Meanwhile, 54 per cent of voters support the Australian Labor Party, whose primary vote has risen by three per cent to 40 per cent. However, the approval rating of Prime Minister Tony Abbott has increased by three per cent to 38 per cent, while his disapproval rating is down four per cent to 46 per cent

Budget sales job failing

Some $A25 billion of the spending cuts and revenue measures in the Australian Government’s May 2014 Budget are likely to be defeated. Treasury secretary Martin Parkinson said that detractors who invoke "vague notions" of unfairness to argue against reform effectively want Australia to enter a slow decline. Parkinson addressed the Crawford Australian Leadership Forum, as did Malcolm Turnbull, the Communications Minister. Turnbull said the nation is overly-dependent on income tax revenue. He implied that the Government has not been sufficiently convincing about the need for reform
