Gender balance improves, but still a long way to go

Data from Chief Executive Women shows that 10 women were appointed as the CEO of an S&P/ASX 300 company in 2022-23. However, the net gain was eight, given that two female CEOs resigned during the period, while men still account for 91 per cent of CEO roles at the nation’s top 300 listed companies. CEW president Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz says progress towards gender equity is being made, but it is still "glacial". The figures do not include the more recent appointment of Michelle Jablko at Transurban and Fiona Hick’s resignation at Fortescue Metals Group. Vanessa Hudson was named the successor to Qantas CEO Alan Joyce in May, but her appointment was originally slated to take effect in November.

Peter Dutton is expected to be endorsed as the Liberal Party of Australia’s new leader at a partyroom meeting on Monday, with Sussan Ley tipped to become deputy leader. Meanwhile, the National Party will hold a post-election leadership spill on Monday, with David Littleproud and Darren Chester set to run against incumbent Barnaby Joyce. Former Nationals leader Michael McCormack has ruled himself out of contention, and he says Joyce’s actions during the election campaign contributed to the Coalition’s defeat. The Coalition is likely to make significant changes to its frontbench team in opposition.

New South Wales Treasurer Dominic Perrottet is set to succeed Gladys Berejiklian as state premier at a leadership ballot on 5 October. Planning Minister Rob Stokes is currently the only other contender, but sources have indicated that Perrottet has sufficient partyroom support to win the ballot. Jobs Minister Stuart Ayres is likely to become deputy premier, despite claims by Liberal insiders that Perrottet has a long-standing agreement for Environment Minister Matt Kean to run as his deputy. Kean is tipped to replace Perrottet in the treasury portfolio. The leadership change is not expected to affect the state’s schedule for reopening the economy.

Victoria’s Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien survived a leadership spill in March, but there is believed to be a renewed push to oust him. Sources have indicated that state and federal Liberal Party MPs had discussed seeking a leadership spill on 22 June, but there had been insufficient numbers to move against O’Brien. The Victorian Liberals’ partyroom is said to be divided, with some MPs supporting either O’Brien or former party leader Matthew Guy, while others do not support either of them. A number of Victorian federal MPs are also pushing for Guy to replace O’Brien ahead of the state election in 2022.

The Construction. Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union’s national political organiser Elizabeth Doidge says Labor leader Anthony Albanese must be ousted ahead of the next election. This follows the release of polling on behalf of key building industry unions which suggests that Labor is set to lose the Hunter Valley electorates of Shortland and Paterson at the next election. Doidge says the polling, which was undertaken in November, shows that Labor cannot win the election with Albanese as its leader. She says Tanya Plibersek would make a "fantastic leader".

National Party leader Michael McCormack has downplayed suggestions that he will step aside before the next federal election. McCormack says he has the full support of Prime Minister Scott Morrison and will lead the Nationals into the election. Bandt abused PM with deaths claim

Original article by Rosie Lewis
The Australian – Page: 4 : 5-Feb-20

Adam Bandt has stepped up his attack on the federal government’s environmental credentials after being elected unopposed as the new leader of the Greens. He has claimed that the Coalition’s climate change policy will result in many more deaths than the recent bushfires, as it will result in a 3-degree temperature increase. Bandt also contends that the business models of fossil fuel producers are unsustainable, and he has called for domestic coal-fired power generation and coal exports to be phased out by 2030. Larissa Waters and Nick McKim are the new joint deputy leaders of the Greens.

Agriculture Minister Bridget McKenzie has resigned from the portfolio and as deputy leader of the National Party, after an investigation by top bureaucrat Phil Gaetjens found that she had breached the ministerial code of conduct. Gaetjens concluded that sports grants had not been improperly allocated during McKenzie’s previous role as sports minister; however, he found that McKenzie’s failure to declare her membership of a gun club that received a grant constituted a breach of the ministerial code. Some Nationals MPs are believed to have approached Barnaby Joyce about challenging Nationals leader Michael McCormack at a partyroom meeting on 4 February, when they will elect a new deputy.

Fortescue Metals Group CEO Elizabeth Gaines is ranked second in Fortune magazine’s 2019 list of the world’s most successful business leaders. Gaines is the first woman to make the annual list. Fortune notes that the pure-play iron ore miner delivered 263 per cent profit growth and revenue growth of 45 per cent in 2018-19, with both metrics rising to record levels in Gaines’ first full financial year at the helm. Meanwhile, Fortescue has achieved a total return of 90 per cent since Gaines was appointed in February 2018, increasing its market value to around $US20bn ($29.4bn).

Quiet Australians shifted votes because of Shorten, not Morrison

Original article by Andrew Tillett
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 6 : 3-Sep-19

Research undertaken by the Australian National University shows that 28.5 per cent of electors switched their voting intentions during the federal election campaign. The analysis of voters’ behaviour also shows that 39.6 per cent of electors who had intended to vote for Labor when the election was called in April subsequently voted for the Coalition on 18 May. Likewise, 37.2 per cent of electors who had expressed their intention to vote for the Coalition ended up giving Labor their vote. The research has concluded that the unpopularity of former Labor leader Bill Shorten was a key factor in the election outcome, rather than Labor’s policies or the personal appeal of Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
