The Australian Labor Party’s rules for electing a federal leader will come under scrutiny at its triennial National Conference in July 2015. Ex-prime minister Kevin Rudd gained caucus approval in mid-2013 for changes which gave caucus and Labor’s rank-and-file members an equal say in the selection of a new party leader. However, the Transport Workers’ Union wants further changes which would give union members an equal vote in selecting a party leader. The push is supported by the Rail, Tram & Bus Union

If Prime Minister Tony Abbott is forced to resign as leader of the Liberal Party of Australia, he will most likely be replaced either by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop or Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. The latter has many conservative opponents within the party who do not share his views on issues such as gay marriage. Abbott has warned his colleagues to focus on governing and stop squabbling over the leadership

The previous poll in January had Labor ahead 54 to 46 on a two-party preferred basis. The Liberal Party of Australia’s motion for a leadership spill failed on 9 February 2015, although the future of Prime Minister Tony Abbott remains tenuous. The motion to dump Abbott was defeated by just 11 votes, but the leadership turmoil will put the Federal Government’s Budget strategy under scrutiny. Abbott has conceded that the May 2014 Budget may have been overly ambitious, and many of the initiatives outlined on Budget night are in doubt. There will also be much uncertainty about the upcoming 2015 Budget

Sources within the Federal Government suggest that between 35 and 40 Coalition MPs are likely to vote in favour of a leadership spill on 9 February 2015. Supporters of the attempt to oust Prime Minister Tony Abbott require at least 52 of the 102 votes to be cast in order for the spill to proceed. However, some observers believe that even if Abbott triumphs it could be only a matter of time before he faces another leadership challenge

There is growing speculation that Prime Minister Tony Abbott will face a leadership spill when Parliament resumes in the week beginning 9 February 2015. One MP has said that Abbott is "on the brink" and say he should sack chief of staff Peta Credlin to gain himself some time to turn around the government’s fortunes. The MP adds that the Coalition could dump Abbott in favour of Malcolm Turnbull if Credlin remains in her post. National Party leader Warren Truss has declared his support for Abbott

His has come under further scrutiny after Senator Arthur Sinodinos told Sky News that his continued support for Abbott is "not unconditional". A Fairfax Media/Ipsos poll shows that the Australian Labor Party now boasts 54 per cent support on a two-party preferred basis, compared with 46 per cent for the Coalition. The approval rating of Prime Minister Tony Abbott is nine points lower at just 29 per cent, while his rating as preferred prime minister has fallen to 34 per cent. Abbott’s future is under scrutiny in the wake of the poor performance of the Queensland Government in the state election, with some backbench MPs agitating for a leadership change

Senior members of the Liberal Party of Australia are believed to have given Prime Minister Tony Abbott six months to repair his reputation among voters. If he fails, he may be replaced as the leader of the party, possibly by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. Abbott has recently made a series of mistakes that made him unpopular even within his own party

The market capitalisation of Westpac has risen twofold to $A103bn under the leadership of outgoing CEO Gail Kelly, who took on the role in 2008. Kelly says the corporate culture that was developed at Westpac during her tenure is her greatest achievement in seven years at the helm, and she is particularly pleased that Westpac is now the leading Australian bank in terms of business and consumer satisfaction. Former Commonwealth Bank CEO Ralph Norris and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop are among those to have praised Kelly
