New data shows that Australia’s LNG exports were 18.5 per cent higher in June 2016 than in May. The data from EnergyQuest also show that LNG production rose by more than 500,000 tonnes to 3.6 million tonnes. There were a total of 44 shipments in June, although there were no shipments from the Gorgon project due to problems with the first production train. Western Australia accounted for 27 shipments, while 22 LNG consignments departed from Queensland.

There is growing recognition among Australian energy groups of the need to continue reducing costs, amid sustained weakness in the crude oil price and a growing oversupply in the LNG market. Santos CEO Kevin Gallagher has suggested greater collaboration among rival LNG groups and has raised the possibility of LNG infrastructure being owned by independent operators rather than producers. Meanwhile, Woodside Petroleum CEO Peter Coleman has acknowledged that the LNG projects in Queensland have cost much more than originally budgeted.

Fortescue backs offshore competition on gas reservation

Fortescue Metals Group believes that changes to Australia’s lease retention system for oil and gas fields should be a higher priority than the Australian Labor Party’s proposed national interest test for LNG export projects. Fortescue, as a major user of gas, argues that scrapping the so-called "use it or lose it" system would be more effective in increasing the supply of gas for domestic customers. The lease retention system has come under scrutiny in the wake of Woodside Petroleum’s decision to put the Browse LNG project on hold.

Shares in Santos closed 8.7 per cent lower at $A4.20 on 4 May 2016, after the oil and gas producer’s annual meeting. Santos has shed 825 employees over the last 18 months, and CEO Kevin Gallagher has confirmed that more redundancies are on the agenda as part of the group’s cost-cutting strategy. He has also indicated that Santos may eventually divest some assets, but stressed that reducing costs and stabilising the company is the immediate priority.

Demerger option looms for Origin

Original article by Angela Macdonald-Smith
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 28 & 22 : 2-May-16

The commencement of production at the Australia Pacific LNG project means Origin Energy’s oil and gas business accounts for the biggest proportion of its operations. This will strengthen the case for those who advocate that Origin should spin off its electricity and gas retailing arm, which boasts 4.3 million customers. However, Origin has some $A9bn worth of debt, which would make a demerger difficult to pursue at present, particularly given the continued weakness of the crude oil price.

Woodside Petroleum has reported sales revenue of $US982m ($A1.26bn) for the March 2016 quarter, which is 30 per cent lower than the same period in 2015. The group has been hit by the downturn in the crude oil price, while production was 4.8 per cent lower than the December 2015 quarter at 23.7 million barrels of oil equivalent. Production was affected by scheduled maintenance at the North West Shelf project and the end of production at the group’s Balnaves oilfield.

Mechanical problems at the Gorgon LNG plant in Western Australia have prompted Chevron to suspend production for up to two months. The energy group said the repair work is "routine", and it has stressed that this will not affect the schedule for the project’s first processing line to achieve full production. The $A55bn Gorgon project – which was originally slated to cost $A37bn – exported its first LNG in late March 2016.

Woodside Petroleum and its partners will not proceed with the Browse floating LNG project due to the downturn in the crude oil price, which is currently trading at around $US40 a barrel. It is estimated that the project would cost $A50bn to develop, and Woodside CEO Peter Coleman says crude oil would have to be trading at between $US50 to $US60 per barrel for Browse to break even. Coleman adds that other options will be considered for developing the Browse project.

Origin Energy chief open to discuss merger offers

Original article by Angela Macdonald-Smith
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 17 & 24 : 4-Mar-16

Market watchers have suggested a number of future strategies for Origin Energy, including a demerger or merging its oil and gas assets with Santos. Origin MD Grant King says the group has not ruled out any of the options that have been mooted, but he notes that all such deals would be complex and take time to complete. Meanwhile, King has downplayed concerns about a modest delay in progress on completing the first two production trains at the Australia Pacific LNG project in Queensland.
