Manufacturing Australia CEO Ben Eade says the federal government must impose LNG export controls due to the high cost of gas in the domestic market. Resources Minister Matt Canavan has signalled that the government may be open to triggering the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism if domestic gas prices remain well above those in Asia. Manufacturers in the eastern states are currently paying more than $10 a gigajoule for gas, and Australian Competition & Consumer chairman Rod Sims has warned that many will be forced to close if gas prices do not fall.

Australian Industrial Energy has secured regulatory approval to use Port Kembla in New South Wales as the location for its proposed LNG import terminal. At this stage, AIE, which is 50 per cent owned by Andrew Forrest’s Squadron Energy, does not have a CEO. Choosing a CEO is likely to be one of its two main goals before making a final decision on whether to proceed with its LNG terminal, along with securing some firm customers.

Woodside Petroleum and Chevron plan to increase the proposed capacity of their Kitimat LNG project in British Columbia from 10 million tonnes a year to 18 million tonnes, and add a third production train. Woodside CEO Sherry Duhe says it is too soon to know whether Chevron’s acquisition of Anadarko Petroleum will impact on the Kitimat project. She has also downplayed concerns about a fall in LNG spot prices in Asia, citing factors such as increased global supply and a warmer-than-expected winter in the northern hemisphere.

China has sourced about 80 per cent of its LNG imports from Australia, Qatar, Malaysia and Indonesia over the last eight years. However, there is speculation that negotiations for a trade deal with the US could see China agree to significantly increase its LNG imports from the US. Any such deal could have major implications for Australia’s LNG exports to China, while other exports could also be affected if China agrees to ramp up its trade with the US.

Record LNG exports, but prices falling

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 13 : 9-Jan-19

The Gladstone LNG, Australia Pacific LNG and Queensland Curtis LNG projects’ export volumes rose to a record 5.4 million tonnes during the December quarter. Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane says the oil and gas industry contributed $8.2bn to the economy in 2017-18. Meanwhile, Saul Kavonic of Credit Suisse says declining gas production in Bass Strait has been the key contributor to rising gas prices on the east coast, and that prices would have risen much more if the three Queensland LNG projects did not sell gas into the domestic market.

Data from Bloomberg shows that Australia’s LNG exports totalled 6.55 million tonnes in November 2018, surpassing Qatar (6.27 million tonnes) for the first time. Australia’s LNG shipments for the calendar year are expected to exceed 78 million tonnes, compared with 77 million tonnes for Qatar. Projects such as Ichthys will further boost Australia’s LNG exports, although both Qatar and the US intend to increase production. Meanwhile, official figures show that Australia’s revenue from LNG exports totalled $38.8bn in the year to October, while coal and iron ore revenue was $64.6bn and $61.6bn respectively.
