US-based Chevron Corporation has advised that production at the $US54bn ($A76bn) Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia is slated to commence shortly. The first shipment is now expected before the end of the March 2016 quarter, after the initial target of late 2015 was pushed back. Meanwhile, Chevron anticipates that the first shipment from its Wheatstone LNG project will occur by mid-2017.

Chevron and its contractors are reducing the workforce at the Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia, with more job cuts expected as the construction phase of the project winds down. About 1,200 jobs have been cut at the Gorgon gas plant on Barrow Island in recent weeks, while Chevron is also believed to have downsized the workforce at its Australian head office in Perth. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the state economy shed about 10,000 jobs in November 2015.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is investigating tax arrangements of the companies involved in the Gorgon natural gas project. The ATO is concerned that the interest on loans provided by Chevron, ExxonMobil and Shell to their Australian arms is more than 10 times higher than the interest rate charged by third-party lenders in the US. The matter is also being investigated by the Senate inquiry into corporate tax avoidance, chaired by Senator Sam Dastyari, which will file an interim report in Parliament on 17 August 2015.

Woodside Petroleum has stopped production at its Pluto LNG field in Western Australia. On 16 March 2015, a cyclone caused a drilling rig to be torn from its moorings. As the rig drifted 5.5 km towards the Pluto field, a shutdown was ordered to protect the plant from damage. It could take up to 30 days to repair the rig

Chevron’s Jay Johnson has indicated that production at the Gorgon LNG project in Western Australia will commence in the September 2015 quarter. Exports are slated to begin by the end of 2015. Johnson adds that the sharp downturn in the crude oil price will not unduly affect the profitability of the $US54bn ($A70.5bn) Gorgon project, noting that it will operate for at least four decades

Gorgon LNG looks ‘fine’: Chevron

Original article by Angela Macdonald-Smith
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 20 : 2-Feb-15

Chevron CEO John Watson says the economics of the $US29 billion Wheatstone and $US54 billion Gorgon LNG projects in Western Australia will be "just fine" once production begins. Watson is less optimistic about the odds of short-term progress at Chevron’s Kitimat LNG project in Canada. He says management is focused on starting production at Gorgon, which had an initial budget of $US37 billion. Watson concedes that the drop in crude oil prices has placed pressure on the LNG sector as well

Woodside Petroleum’s Chinese customers have accused the Australian company and its partners of delaying LNG shipments. The Chinese side claims that the North West Shelf Gas consortium is holding back gas in an attempt to force the clients to renegotiate the terms of a deal signed in 2002 and raise the price. At an investor briefing in August 2014, Woodside CEO Peter Coleman said the contract was running at a "cash loss"

Peter Coleman, CEO of Australian-listed energy group Woodside Petroleum, has announced the acquisition for $US3.75bn ($A4.6bn) combined of holdings in two LNG developments from US-based Apache Energy. Woodside will gain a 13% stake in the Wheatstone project offshore Western Australia (WA) and one of 50% in the Kitimat tenements in Canada. The deal will please investors who had been concerned at a lack of new growth assets for the company. At the same time it has, along with allies Royal Dutch Shell and BP, again postponed the roll-out of floating LNG technology at their Browse field off WA

Woodside’s Apache bid may kill Browse

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 20 : 10-Dec-14

Insiders claim that Australian-listed Woodside Petroleum has made a pitch to US partner Apache Energy, to acquire the latter’s 13% stake in the Wheatstone LNG development offshore Western Australia. The likely price tag is $US1.8bn ($A2.17bn), and other potential suitors appear to have abandoned their bids due to the recent decline of the crude oil price. If Woodside goes ahead, it may no longer want to pursue its stalled Browse LNG project. A floating LNG production platform has been proposed for it by Woodside and allies Royal Dutch Shell and BP

Woodside mulls regasification to meet domestic obligation

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 19 : 10-Nov-14

The Western Australian (WA) Government currently imposes a domestic gas reservation policy on producers such as Woodside Petroleum and its joint venturers in the Browse floating LNG development. The companies are set to continue their lobbying effort against this, but are also preparing for the maintenance of the policy by considering a regasification plant in the South West region of WA. This would help them meet the mandated target of 15% of LNG output to be available to local users
