Galaxy Resources recently announced that it would acquire $22.5 million worth of shares in lithium exporter Alliance Mineral Assets. The transaction will make Galaxy the biggest shareholder in Alliance, with a stake in excess of 10 per cent. Neometals proposes to build a lithium hydroxide plant near Kalgoorlie, with an annual processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Should the project proceed, it will increase the potential lithium processing capacity in Western Australia to around 200,000 tonnes a year, given that four other plants have either been proposed or are under construction in the state. Neometals plans to source spodumene for the plant from the Mount Marion lithium mine. A final investment decision is expected in mid-2019.

Roskill MD Robert Baylis has warned of a looming oversupply of lithium as Australian producers ramp up output. Baylis notes that production of spodumene in particular is now much higher than global demand. Western Australia’s spodumene export volumes have risen by 84 per cent in recent years, with Tawana Resources, Altura Mining and Pilbara Minerals all set to open new mines in WA during the next six months. Baylis says it will take up to five years for global demand to catch up to supply.

Growing global demand for lithium has prompted pure-play iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group to diversify by revealing plans to explore tenements near existing lithium deposits in Western Australia. Shares in Australian-listed lithium miners have rallied in recent months, amid rising demand for electric cars and plans by some car makers to phase out traditional petrol-only vehicles. Meanwhile, Richard Coppleson of Bell Potter says lithium could follow the same price trajectory as iron ore in the mid-2000s.

Kidman Resources has sold a 50 per cent stake in its Earl Grey lithium deposit to Chile-based SQM for $A110m. The deal comprises a cash payment of $A30m, with the balance to be provided in the form of development funding. Rather than merely exporting lithium ore, Kidman and SQM intend to build a processing plant in Australia to convert the ore to lithium hydroxide. John Deniz of Paragon Funds Management says integrated projects are likely to be more resilient if demand for lithium eases.

Original article by Tess Ingram
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 16 : 10-Jul-17

The Supreme Court of Western Australia has ruled in favour of Kidman Resources in a legal dispute over the Earl Grey lithium project. Marindi Metals had claimed that it had a binding deal to acquire the project’s lithium rights, which Kidman had disputed. The court found that there was no draft heads of agreement between Kidman and Marindi. Kidman MD Martin Donohue has welcomed the judgment, saying the company can now focus on developing Earl Grey and its other projects.

Legal row over WA lithium discovery

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 22 : 15-Nov-16

Australian-listed Kidman Resources has rejected claims by Marindi Metals that it has a binding agreement to acquire the Earl Grey lithium deposit. Marindi engaged in email discussions with Kidman in April 2016 regarding the acquisition of the latter’s lithium rights at its tenements in Western Australia, and it alleges that these discussions constitute a binding contract. Kidman subsequently commenced a drilling program which resulted in the Earl Grey discovery.
