NSW Liberal Leader Mark Speakman says he has twice spoken to federal opposition leader Peter Dutton about the efficiency of the NSW branch of the party, following its failure to nominate close to 140 councillors in next month’s NSW council elections. He says he can understand the concerns of the federal branch of the party, given that there is a federal election due next year, but that any attempt by the federal Liberal party to take over the NSW state branch following the council nominations debacle would be "premature".

The Minerals Council of Australia has called the City of Newcastle’s decision to dump its holdings in banks that finance fossil fuel projects a "pointless sham" and urged it to support the local economy. The New South Wales city is home to the world’s biggest coal port. Mining’s direct spend in Newcastle is about $A1.8 billion a year, rising to $A5.9 billion when the greater Hunter region is taken into account. The divestment decision was supported by Australian Labor Party and Australian Greens councillors.

The New South Wales Land & Environment Court has ruled against a residential property owner who applied to clear land under new laws rolled out in August 2014. These are designed to help prevent bushfires, and allow for the removal of otherwise protected trees within 10 metres of a dwelling and shrubs within 50 metres. A number of local government councils have similarly rejected clearing proposals, while others argue that the new rules hamper legitimate property development

Former Ryde City Council mayor Ivan Petch wants the Supreme Court of New South Wales to overturn an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) ruling that he engaged in corrupt conduct.
