Dr John Lawson of the Sydney Children’s Hospital notes that there is growing interest in the use of medical marijuana to treat epileptic children. He has welcomed the New South Wales Government’s recent decision to provide $A9m to finance a trial of medical marijuana, and has emphasised that any such drugs given to children will have no psychoactive properties

Medicinal use of cannabis on agenda

The New South Wales (NSW) Government is funding a symposium to be staged in Tamworth on 21-22 November 2014, on the legal medicinal use of cannabis for cancer sufferers and terminally ill patients. A potential trial of such an approach has the backing of both NSW Premier Mike Baird, who will open the Tamworth event, and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott. No Australian Medical Association representative will attend the symposium

Nats MP a reluctant drug crusader

New South Wales MP Kevin Anderson was persuaded to support the decriminalisation of cannabis for medicinal use. Lou and Lucy Haslem of Tamworth told the National Party MP about their son’s illness. After considering the issue, he promised to take action. Anderson will present a private member’s bill to the state Parliament
