Some 26.3 per cent of Coopers Brewery’s sales were generated in New South Wales (NSW) during the first seven months of 2014-15. South Australia (SA) accounted for 24.8 per cent of the Adelaide-based brewery’s sales. MD Tim Cooper expects NSW to maintain its position as the group’s top-selling market, citing factors such as the state’s bigger population and the lower population growth in SA. New data from KPMG show that the overall Australian metropolitan free-to-air TV advertising market suffered a 3.04% decline in the first six months of 2014-15, to $A1.5bn. This contrasts with growth a year earlier of 5.01% to $A1.6bn. However that period was marked by the federal election campaign, and Seven West Media chief revenue officer Kurt Burnette argues the slump now is merely cyclical rather than structural. His group lifted its share by 0.66% to 40.4%. Nine Entertainment also gained, while Ten Network saw its share fall from 21.52% to 20.4%

Australian telcos Telstra and Singtel Optus now have access to more parts of the wireless frequency spectrum, enabling them to boost their 4G mobile telephony and internet offerings. The combined spending of $A2bn on the 700Mhz and 2.5Ghz bands will according to experts at Morgan Stanley trigger substantial growth in the number of subscribers using data plans for mobile devices such as tablet computers. Telstra in particular will benefit, and lift its market share to 54% during 2014-15. Users will experience more generous data allowances but few price falls

Beer excise puts brewers over a barrel

Original article by Andrew Main
The Australian – Page: 15 : 15-Jan-15

Tim Cooper, CEO of family-owned South Australian company Coopers Brewery, has criticised the biannual excise indexation for beer. The tax now accounts for $A15 of the price of a carton of beer, and Cooper argues that this has contributed to a decline in consumer demand in the sector of 8.4% between 2008 and 2014. However Coopers has managed to lift sales to 77.3 million litres in 2014, up 7% year-on-year, and to boost its market share to 5%. The core Original Pale Ale product is supplemented by overseas labels brewed under licence, such as Sapporo and Carlsberg
