Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp says new modernisation plans for that city’s historic Queen Victoria Market will enable it to keep operating successfully for another 100 years. The new plans include increased refrigeration for fresh produce stall holders and centralised waste and recycling facilities. However, Friends of Queen Victoria Market president Mary-Lou Howie says the market would lose its ‘gritty’ appeal under the proposed plans, which she contends are the work of ‘neatniks’. She says the main concern of traders remains the proposed replacement of the market’s open-air park with a public space.

Rohan Leppert and Jennifer Yang are among the candidates for the role of Melbourne’s lord mayor who will instruct voters to direct their preferences away from Sally Capp in the upcoming by-election. Capp is the executive director of the Property Council, which lobbies on behalf of developers. Rival candidate Gary Morgan says the by-election has become a referendum on the proposed redevelopment of the Queen Victoria Market, which Capp supports. Morgan opposes the redevelopment.

Pollster Gary Morgan says Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market will become "Queen Victoria Chadstone" if a proposed $A250 million re-development goes ahead. Morgan, who is running for the position of Melbourne lord mayor, agrees with fellow candidate Sally Warhaft that the development should not proceed. Warhaft and Morgan, who had not met before the mayoral campaign, have urged voters to treat the by-election as a referendum on the market’s future. Morgan says Melbourne will lose a major tourist attraction if the re-development proceeds.
