Seven West Media’s live streaming of its tennis coverage was viewed about 4.4 million times during the summer of 2014-15. It is estimated that this will exceed eight million views in the 2015-16 summer, including users of the 7tennis app and the Plus7 live TV stream. Seven’s chief digital officer Clive Dickens notes that just one sponsor of Seven’s TV coverage chose not to take up a sponsorship package for its digital coverage. He adds that the success of the tennis coverage bodes well for Seven’s broadcast of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.

OzTAM will officially launch its new digital TV ratings system in early February 2016. It will measure the number of people who view TV content online and via portable devices. The launch of the Video Player Measurement system has coincided with a decline in the amount of time people spent watching traditional broadcast TV. The Australian Multi-Screen Report shows that this fell from an average of about three hour per day to just two hours and 49 minutes in the December 2014 quarter.

The Department of Communications has recommended a reduction in the annual licence fee paid by Australia’s free-to-air TV networks. Such a move could increase industry support for proposed changes to cross-media ownership laws, although Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has warned that any reduction in licence fees would have to be accompanied by increased revenue or measures to cut costs elsewhere.

Macquarie Media CEO Adam Lang says the group is reviewing the format of its 2UE radio station in Sydney, although he has declined to comment on reports that it will adopt a lifestyle and sponsored advertising format. It competes with ABC702 and fellow Macquarie Media station 2GB in the crowded Sydney market. Meanwhile, Macquarie is believed to be in talks with a potential buyer of 2CH, which must be divested under current media ownership laws.
