The Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts Awards were presented on 9 December 2015. "Mad Max: Fury Road" took out eight awards in the feature films category, including film of the year and best director. "The Dressmaker" won four awards, including best actress and the People’s Choice Award. A mini-series on the life of entertainer Peter Allen won seven awards in the television category.

UK executive tipped to lead ABC

The former controller of BBC One, Jay Hunt, has downplayed reports that she is a leading candidate to succeed Mark Scott as MD of the ABC. Hunt has been the chief creative officer at the UK’s Channel 4 since 2010, and says she has no immediate plans to leave the public broadcaster. ABC chairman Jim Spigelman is believed to favour Kim Williams as the new MD, although some ABC directors have reservations about appointing Williams to the role.

Field of streams: the sports broadcasts that could win over Australian Netflix and YouTube audiences

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 80 per cent of Australians aged 14+ watch sport on television. The survey, which was carried out in the six months to September 2015, also shows that 77 per cent of Australians who have a Netflix subscription almost always or occasionally watch at least one sport on TV, as do 79 per cent of those who visit YouTube. Meanwhile, Netflix subscribers are 25 per cent more likely than the average Australian to watch Super Rugby, and 18 per cent more likely to watch FIFA World Cup soccer. Visitors to YouTube have an above-average interest in soccer, being around 20 per cent more likely than average to watch the English Premier League, FIFA World Cup or A-League.

Fairfax invests in neighbourhood company

Australian-listed Fairfax Media has paid an undisclosed price for a 25 per cent stake in Nabo, a neighbourhood-based social media network that was founded in November 2014. Seven West Media and venture capital group Reinventure were both among the initial investors in Nabo, and each have a 25 per cent stake in the venture. Fairfax has previously invested in a similar New Zealand social media network called Neighbourly.

Ad market set for election bounce in 2016, say sales bosses

Australia’s commercial TV networks are upbeat about the outlook for the advertising market in 2016. Seven West Media’s chief revenue officer Kurt Burnette notes that there was 11 per cent growth in the ad market in 2004, which is the last time the Olympics and a federal election were held in the same year. Optimism about the ad market in 2016 will also be bolstered by the national census in August.

News Corp grabs stake in hipages

News Corp Australia executives Brett Clegg and Alisa Bowen are expected to become directors of hipages following a strategic alliance between the two companies. News Corp has bought a 25 per cent stake in the home improvement portal, which provides householders with free quotes from tradespeople such as plumbers and electricians. Hipages was founded in 2004 and now boasts 200 employees. Seven West Media and Fairfax Media were also interested in investing in hipages.

Murdoch pays tribute as agenda-setting editor retires

The editor of Sydney’s "The Daily Telegraph", Paul Whittaker, will succeed Chris Mitchell as editor-in-chief of "The Australian". Mitchell has been in the role since 2002, after a previous three-year stint as editor of the national broadsheet. News Corporation’s co-chairman Rupert Murdoch, as well as News Corp Australia executive chairman Michael Miller and CEO Peter Tonagh, have praised Mitchell’s contribution to the media group’s flagship Australian newspaper.

SBS staffer convicted over drunken post

SBS employee Nicholas Hogan has been given a two-year good behaviour bond after being convicted of making threats to kill police officers. The Newton Local Court in Sydney found the editing assistant guilty on a charge of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. Hogan had posted a message on Facebook stating that he intended to kill a police officer in the name of Allah. The post was made one day after the funeral of police accountant Curtis Cheng, who was murdered by a Islamic extremist.

Seven fends off Nine to win ratings again

The Seven Network was Australia’s top-rating TV network in 2015, with an overall audience share of 29.3 per cent. This compares with 30.4 per cent in 2014, while the Nine Network’s audience share also fell. However, the Ten Network’s audience share rose by 0.9 per cent to 18.8 per cent. Nine’s Andrew Backwell says the network is not concerned about total viewers, arguing that it was the market leader in the key age demographics in 2015.

Connected families flowing fast to streaming

It is estimated that some 10 per cent of Australian households now have access to Netflix, while rival subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) provider Stan has indicated that it has nearly 400,000 subscribers. Research by Telsyte shows that the average household now boasts more than nine internet-connected devices, and more people are opting to watch TVs and movies via SVOD than free-to-air TV.
