Saxon Smith, New South Wales president of the Australian Medical Association, has warned consumers against using a new test for coeliac disease. It is available for $A45 from the Amcal, Amcal Max and Guardian pharmacies chains, but is only 93% reliable even according to Sigma Pharmaceuticals COO Gary Dunne. Katie Ellard, secretary of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, has also voiced concerns about the test and the ability of chemists to offer a diagnosis to patients

Concern over alternative breast screen treatments

A new study published in the "Medical Journal of Australia", by Adelaide University researcher Linda Mundy and others, warns of women being misled by unscientific breast cancer screening services. They use methods such as digital infrared thermal imaging, electrical impedance scanning or electronic palpation imaging that are not backed by evidence. The Cancer Council Australia notes that two such providers in Perth have been cited in a Federal Court action brought by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission, with penalties still to be handed down

Stem cell treatment fears after Brisbane mum dies in Russia

The National Health & Medical Research Council in Australia has warned consumers about the risks in opting for unproven and unregulated stem cell treatments, including in overseas locations. "Stem cell tourism" is being promoted by groups such as the Adult Stem Cell Foundation, but bodies including MS Australia and Stem Cells Australia are urging patients to seek the advice of medical professionals. A Brisbane woman who had gone to Russia for stem cell treatment as she suffered from Stiff Person Syndrome has died of heart failure during the procedure

Warning over pop-up clinics

Private provider Screen For Life has been sending letters to Western Australian (WA) consumers, promoting screening for heart disease, aneurysm and stroke risk at its mobile clinics. The four scans cost $A225, and the letter cites Heart Foundation data. However that organisation says it does no endorse the routine screening of people who do not exhibit symptoms. The WA Health Department also notes that the Screen For Life tests are not supported by public health officials anywhere in Australia
