White out: Aussies opt for fresh over long-lasting milk

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 70 per cent of Australians aged 14+ consumed fresh milk in an average seven days during the year to December 2014. In contrast, just 15 per cent of Australians consumed UHT/long-life milk. The survey also shows that consumption of UHT/long-life milk rose from 14 per cent of the population to 15 per cent between 2010 and 2014. The proportion of Australians drinking fresh milk declined from 72 per cent to 70 per cent over this period.

Iced-coffee drinkers ‘Dare’ to be different

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 6.8 per cent of Australians aged 14+ consumed coffee-flavoured milk at least once in any given seven-day period during the year to June 2014. Some 4.9 per cent consumed a brand that only offers coffee-flavoured milk, while just 2.8 per cent consumed brands that offer coffee as well as other flavours. Dare is the most popular dedicated iced coffee brand of flavoured milk, with consumption rising from 0.7 per cent of the population in 2009 to 1.8 per cent in 2014

Supply deals the way to go, says Coles

Coles has signed a 10-year contract with Murray Goulburn for the supply of milk. On 3 July 2014, Murray Goulburn opened a new milk processing plant in the Melbourne suburb of Laverton. The plant will produce 1.3 million litres of milk per annum, which will be sold at Coles supermarkets under its own brand. Coles MD John Durkan said the company will seek similar long-term supply arrangements with other food manufacturers
