Some Western Australian Indigenous leaders claim new legislation aimed at preventing a repeat of Rio Tinto’s 2020 destruction of the 46,000-year old Jukaan Gorge heritage site offers even less heritage protection, and they are seeking veto power over mining developments in WA. One such leader is Banjima elder Slim Parker, who has attacked BHP over the time it is taking to investigate damage to a culturally important cave at one of its mines on Banjima country. The WA government is not willing to allow Indigenous leaders veto powers over mining developments, while the WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy also opposes the idea.

Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan has banned Mineral Resources from carrying out iron ore mining in the Helena-Aurora Ranges conservation park. Mineral Resources had sought to mine there in order to allow it to extend its Yilgarna operations for a further 15 years. McGowan’s decision puts at risk over 400 jobs, while Mineral Resources has estimated the decision will cost the WA government around $A1 billion in state revenue. Mineral Resources is expected to wind up operations at Yilgarna by the end of 2018, and will try to deploy affected workers elsewhere.

The Chamber of Minerals & Energy of Western Australia has launched a "grassroots" campaign against the State Government’s proposed increase in the gold royalty rate. Social media will be the initial focus of the campaign, although the CME has not ruled out extending it to include radio advertising. As part of the campaign, about 1,500 employers of gold mining companies have held a rally in Kalgoorlie. Meanwhile, Treasurer Ben Wyatt has downplayed the gold industry’s concerns about the potential impact of the royalty increase on the sector.
