Australia’s most satisfying home phone, mobile phone, internet, and utilities service providers were announced last week at the 2016 Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards. Southern Phone scored its fourth consecutive Home Phone Service Provider award, with a clean sweep of the year’s monthly awards and a peak of 90 per cent of customers satisfied. Internode made it two in a row in the category of Home Broadband Service Provider and claimed all 12 monthly awards in 2016. Meanwhile, iiNet won five monthly awards in the category of Mobile Phone Service Provider, taking out the annual award against strong competition. Red Energy took out the award for Electricity Provider for a second successive year, while Lumo Energy was Gas Provider of the year, with eight monthly awards and a peak of 78% of customers satisfied.

Why Vodafone is the top mobile provider in (only) Sydney

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that among Australia’s 18,775,000 mobile owners aged 14+ Telstra is the clear number one mobile service provider, which 43.6 per cent use for a mobile phone, ahead of Optus (24.1 per cent) and Vodafone (18.0 per cent). The survey, which was carried out in the six months to December 2016, also shows that Telstra claims only around one in three mobile owners overall (33.6 per cent) across the five mainland state capitals, compared with 26.3 per cent for Optus and 24.1 per cent for Vodafone. Meanwhile, Telstra has the largest market share in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide, but Vodafone has the largest market share in Sydney (30.4 per cent).

What’s a Telstra? Who’s Optus? More immigrants choose global brand Vodafone as first Australian mobile provider

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that Vodafone is the most popular telco among the 5.3 million Australian mobile phone owners aged 14+ who were born overseas. Vodafone claimed 32 per cent of the mobile market among immigrants overall in the six months to November 2016. The survey also shows that 47 per cent of immigrants who have lived in Australia for less than two years choose Vodafone as their local provider, ahead of Optus (24 per cent) and Telstra (12 per cent). In contrast, Telstra is used by 39 per cent of immigrants who have lived in Australia for more than 20 years, and 47 per cent of people who were born in Australia.

Zooming in on mobile phone switching: Broadie vs Byron

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 15 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who own a mobile phone are likely to switch their Mobile Service Provider in the next 12 months. Analysis shows that there are 59 suburbs and towns across Australia where residents are at least 50 per cent more likely than average to switch mobile provider in the next year. The Melbourne suburb of Broadmeadows has the highest level of mobile owners who are likely to switch providers, at 30 per cent. At the other end of the spectrum, only seven per cent of residents of Byron Bay in New South Wales plan to switch mobile providers.

Girls given mobile phones before boys (thanks, Dad!)

The latest Roy Morgan Young Australians Survey has found that 69% of girls aged 6-13 own a personal mobile phone, compared with 64% of boys. However, just 3% of boys and 2% of girls aged 6-7 own a mobile phone. This rises to 12 per cent of girls and 5% of boys aged 8-9. The gap between girls and boys becomes starkest at age 10 and 11, when an additional 17% of girls get a phone, compared with 15% of boys, while a further 41% of boys and 38% of girls aged 12-13 own their own phone. Meanwhile, a Roy Morgan Single Source Survey of Australians aged 14+ has found that 19 per cent of girls and 16 per cent of boys aged 14-15 have their own mobile phone. By the end of their teens, 98% of men and 99% of women have their own mobile phone.

Vodafone set to launch NBN service – and over half a million customers already want to switch their fixed broadband provider

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 3.5 million Australians aged 14+ have a mobile phone with Vodafone, while 2.5 million of these Vodafone mobile customers (71 per cent) also have fixed broadband at home, including almost one in 10 who are already on the National Broadband Network. The survey, which was carried out in the six months to September 2016, also shows that 550,000 of Vodafone’s mobile customers are already intending to switch fixed broadband provider in the next 12 months, while 22 per cent are very or fairly likely to switch.

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that over four million Australians aged 14+ (21 per cent) plan to buy a new mobile phone in the next 12 months. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2016, also shows that 23 per cent of AFL and NRL club supporters intend to buy a new handset in the next 12 months. Huawei is currently the only handset maker that is a sponsor of an AFL or NRL team. Huawei is a major sponsor of the Canberra Raiders, and 24 per cent of the NRL team’s supporters intend to buy a new handset in the next 12 months. However, Raiders fans are almost 20 per cent less likely than average to want one of the two dominant handset brands, the Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Huawei is also a technology and ball partner of the Gold Coast Suns, and 34 per cent of the AFL team’s fans are in the market for a new mobile phone, while they also more likely to have their hearts set on an Apple iPhone.

9 in 10 Aussie teens now have a mobile (and most are already on to their second or subsequent handset)

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 91 per cent of Australian teens aged 14-17 (or just over one million) have a mobile phone. The survey, which was carried out in the year to June 2016, also shows that 94 per cent of teens who are mobile phone owners have a smartphone, while 75 per cent are already on to their second or subsequent handset. Meawhile, 78 per cent of mobile-owning teens say someone else pays for all or most of their usage charges, and 62 per cent got their current mobile handset brand new. Some 65 per cent are using prepaid and 35 per cent are on a postpaid plan – almost the exact reverse of the ratio in the general population.

Telstra bets on rising mobile demand for Stan, Netflix and Presto

Customers on some Telstra mobile plans will receive three months’ free access to Netflix, Stan and Presto. The telco will also make content from all three subscription video-on-demand services available via its new Telstra TV Plus app. Video streaming over Telstra’s mobile network has increased by 30 per cent in the last year, with a strong rise in streaming during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in particular.

Why Woolworths and Telstra are a perfect match (and so are Coles and Optus)

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 47 per cent of Australian grocery buyers aged 14+ who mainly shop at Woolworth are Telstra mobile phone customers, compared with 39 per cent of Coles’ main shoppers. Meanwhile, 22 per cent of Coles’ main shoppers are Optus mobile phone customers, compared with 19 per cent of Woolworths’ main shoppers. The survey, which was carried out in the year to March 2016, also shows that Woolworths is more commonly associated with Quality and Coles with Price – just as Telstra and Optus are.
