As it pursues the most lucrative sector of the market, Optus says it is already spending more per customer than its big rival. Optus net profit was $A196 million in the three months to 30 June 2015. Operating revenue rose 13 per cent to $A1.9 billion.

Flexibility key to Amaysim’s appeal says Ogrin

Shares in mobile virtual network operator Amaysim closed at $A1.90 on 15 July 2015, compared with an issue price of $A1.80. Amaysim currently boasts about 718,000 mobile subscribers, and it is targeting one million customers by 2019. CEO Julian Ogrin is confident that Amaysim will continue to grow, noting that Australian consumers are increasingly demanding more control over the mobile handset and provider they use. Amaysim resells mobile services via the Optus network.

Vodafone Australia currently boasts about six per cent of the nation’s small business telecommunications market, but it aims to lift this to 18 per cent by 2019. Vodafone’s Stuart Kelly expects this segment of the market to be worth more than $A5bn by 2019, compared with $A4.5bn at present. As part of its strategy to target small business customers, Vodafone will launch new mobile telephone packages under its "Ready Business" brand.

Analysts value mobile telephone services reseller Amaysim at between $A367m and $A483m. The private equity owners of Amaysim are believed to be looking at a valuation of about $A400m for a proposed IPO. Amaysim currently boasts about 716,000 mobile phone subscribers and forecasts that its customer base will top one million by fiscal 2019. However, the telco is facing competition from Australia’s three mobile network owners.

Revived Vodafone sets its sights on small business growth

Vodafone Hutchison Australia increased its revenue in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015, which is the first time since 2010 that the telco’s revenue has risen. CFO James Marsh is upbeat about Vodafone’s outlook, forecasting that revenue and customer numbers will continue to increase. He says the telco will seek to build a greater share of the small and medium enterprise market, while it also hopes to re-enter the wholesale mobile services sector.

Just a SIM: increasing proportion of post-paid mobile customers bringing own handset to the plan

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 30.6 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who have a post-paid mobile phone used their own handset when taking up a new plan in the six months to December 2014. This compares with 24.7 per cent during the same period in 2013. The survey also shows that the proportion of Telstra’s post-paid customers who are now SIM-only has risen from 26.4 per cent to 30.6 per cent, while Optus’s SIM-only customer base has risen from 19.8 per cent to 27.5 per cent.

Over a million Australians now use two mobile phones

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that six per cent of Australians aged 14+ now use two separate mobile telephones. The survey, which was carried out in the year to November 2014, also shows that 53 per cent have a phone that is paid for by their place of work and one which they pay for themselves. Meanwhile, more than 50 per cent of Australians who use two mobile phones are signed up with two different telcos, while 58 per cent have a post-paid plan for both handsets
