NSW detectives from Strike Force Pearl have arrested former Bankstown Hospital nurse Sarah Abu Lebdeh several weeks after she and a male colleague threatened to kill Israeli patients. The 26-year-old has been charged with three commonwealth offences, including threatening violence to a group, the use of a carriage service to threaten to kill, and use of a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. Police Commissioner Karen Webb says the charges have been laid following a lot of hard work, as well as legal advice received from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions on Tuesday. Ahmad Rashad Nadir has yet to be charged over the antisemitic rant that was recorded by Israeli social media influencer Max Veifer.

The federal government has advised that the nation’s terrorism threat alert will be raised from ‘possible’ to ‘probable’. ASIO’s director-general Mike Burgess has warned that the chance of a terrorist attack in the next 12 months is now more than 50 per cent. He adds that young ‘lone-wolf’ terrorists armed with guns and knives pose the biggest risk. Burgess says that while the Israel-Hamas war is contributing to the growing threat of a terrorist attack, social media is being used to radicalise people and to spread extremist ideologies and conspiracy theories. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the Greens have contributed to the growing tensions within the community with their stance on issues such as the war in Gaza.

Victoria’s Court of Appeal has lifted a suppression order that had prevented the media from reporting on the conviction of three Muslim men on terrorism charges. A jury took seven day to find Ahmed Mohamed, Abdullah Chaarani and Hamza Abbas guilty over a plan to launch a terrorism attack in the Melbourne CBD at Christmas in 2016. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation’s Director-General of Security, Duncan Lewis, has also revealed that the terrorism plot had been detected due to the work of a recent ASIO recruit.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victoria Police’s Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton say the Bourke Street rampage by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali was clearly a terrorist attack, rejecting claims by his family that he was mentally ill. Ashton has also warned that law enforcement agencies lack the resources to fully monitor the "hundreds" of Muslims in Australia who have been radicalised. Police have revealed that Shire Ali had links to other Islamic State supporters, including Khaled Sharrouf and Brighton siege perpetrator Yacqub Khayre.

Roy Morgan Research CEO Michele Levine appears on podcast "The Daily" to discuss how public opinion polls are carried out, in the wake of an online Essential poll which showed that 49 per cent of Australians support a ban on Muslim immigration. Levine notes that the Essential poll uses an online panel, whereas Roy Morgan uses face-to-face interviews and telephone surveys in order to ensure that its polls represent an accurate cross-section of Australians. She adds that a Roy Morgan poll in 2015 found that just 28 per cent of Australians opposed Muslim immigration.
