Country Press Australia is holding talks with both Facebook and Google regarding the news media bargaining code. CPA represents the publishers of 160 regional newspapers nationwide; its negotiations have come at a time when there is growing concern that the Facebook News product will have limited relevance to regional newspapers as it is focused primarily on national news. Australian Community Media is also in talks with Facebook, while it secured a deal with Google in late 2020.

The three partners in the Greater Sunrise LNG project have resumed negotiations with representatives of the Australian and Timor Leste governments. Processing gas from Sunrise at the Darwin LNG plant or a floating LNG facility remain the preferred option of the project’s partners, rather than a Timor Leste processing facility. Timor Leste Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri has indicated that his government would be open to options other than this one, although chief of staff Nelson Santos has stated that shipping gas to Timor Leste for processing must be considered.

Cricket rights set for delay amid pay war

Negotiations for a new cricket broadcasting rights deal are expected to be put on hold until 2018. Cricket Australia had commenced preliminary talks with TV networks, but factors such as the pay dispute with top cricketers and the collapse of the Ten Network may prompt a final deal to be delayed. Cricket Australia had been aiming to gain around $A900m for the next five-year rights deal, compared with about $A600m under the current deal. However, sports rights experts say Ten’s collapse means that around $A700m is more likely.

Original article by Peter Ker

The downturn in coal prices and a global oversupply is expected to result in Japan’s power companies securing a lower contract price in current negotiations with Australian thermal coal producers. The annual contract price is usually higher than the spot price, but the utilities are believed to be seeking a discount of at least 10 per cent on the previous contract price of about $US67 per tonne. RBC Capital Markets forecasts that the thermal coal price will rebound to around $US65/tonne in 2018.
