The New South Wales government has been criticised for ignoring the national plan for reopening the economy. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has revealed that some COVID-19 restrictions will be eased for fully-vaccinated people from 11 October, when 70 per cent of residents aged 16+ are expected to have had two vaccine doses. Restrictions will be further relaxed by 25 October, when the fully-vaccinated target of 80 per cent is slated to be achieved. However, most restrictions are set to remain in place for unvaccinated people until 1 December, when 90 per cent of the eligible population is expected to be fully vaccinated. NSW has reported 787 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases and 12 additional deaths from the current outbreak.

New South Wales has recorded 1,351 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, while the state’s death toll from the current outbreak has risen by 12 for a second consecutive day. The latest fatalities ranged in age from their 40s to their 90s, and Health Minister Brad Hazzard has emphasised that 10 of these people had not been vaccinated. Meanwhile, the regional local government areas of Albury and Lismore will be placed in lockdown for at least seven days after reporting new COVID-19 cases; however, 12 regional LGAs have emerged from lockdown after case numbers stabilised.

New South Wales has recorded 1,281 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases and six additional deaths in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, modelling undertaken by the Burnet Institute on behalf of the state government suggest that case numbers in the 12 local government areas at the epicentre of the current outbreak could soon top 2,000 per day. The modelling also forecasts that the number of people in NSW in intensive care will rise to 947 in October, including 560 cases that are directly attributable to COVID-19. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has been criticised for only realising the modelling that relates to the LGAs of most concern. There are 177 people with COVID-19 in intensive care statewide, including four children under the age of 12.

New South Wales has recorded 1,116 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, while the state’s toll from the current outbreak has risen to 100 after another four deaths; none of them were vaccinated and they all had underlying health conditions. Some 917 people are in hospital with COVID-19 across NSW, including 150 in intensive care. The hospitalisation rate has surged in the last week, but Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned that this is likely to peak in October. However, she has reiterated that lockdown restrictions will be eased when 70 per cent of the state’s eligible population is fully vaccinated; this target is expected to be reached in mid-October.

New South Wales has recorded 681 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, while the state’s death toll from the current outbreak has risen to 61. Premier Gladys Berejiklian has conceded that the Delta variant means that achieving zero new cases in the community is unrealistic, and the nation will have to "learn to live with Delta" when 80 per cent of the population is fully vaccinated and the economy reopens. However, Prime Minister Scott Morrison has emphasised the importance of a suppression strategy in Sydney, arguing that the lockdown must work. The state government has extended the lockdown in regional NSW until 28 August, in line with the Greater Sydney lockdown.

Blow to Packer as NSW commits to casino shake-up

The New South Wales government has advised that it will implement all 19 recommendations made by the Bergin inquiry into Crown Resorts. Amongst other things, former judge Patricia Bergin recommended the creation of an independent casino regulator and a ban on individuals or businesses owning more than 10 per cent of a casino operator without regulatory approval. This is likely to require James Packer to reduce his 37 per cent stake in Crown, while it may also make it harder for him to sell his stake to potential buyers of the group.

A record 633 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases have been reported in New South Wales in the last 24 hours; at least 92 of these people were active in the community while they were infectious. The state’s reproductive rate is currently 1.3, and Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned that case numbers will keep rising until this falls below 1. University of Melbourne epidemiologist James McCaw says daily case numbers in NSW could potentially rise to around 2,000 within a month, given that there are now more than 3,800 mystery cases. The state’s death toll from the current outbreak has risen by three, to 59.

New South Wales has recorded 356 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours; at least 97 of these people were active in the community while they were infectious. The state’s toll from the current outbreak has risen to 32 following another three deaths. A fourth person has died after he contracted the coronavirus while overseas and tested positive in hotel quarantine. Meanwhile, Premier Gladys Berejiklian has rejected calls for stricter lockdown measures, such as a curfew or a ‘ring of steel’ around Sydney, and flagged the possibility that restrictions could be eased at the end of August if the state achieves its vaccination targets. However, chief health officer Kerry Chant says it is too soon to be thinking about easing restrictions, emphasising the need to reduce daily case numbers.

The state’s death toll from COVID-19 has risen by five, and Premier Gladys Berejiklian notes that none of the 21 deaths so far in the current outbreak had been fully vaccinated. Berejiklian says too soon for road map out of lockdown

Original article by Luke Cormack, Alexandra Smith
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 4-Aug-21

New South Wales has recorded 199 new locally-acquired COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, including at least 50 people who were active in the community while they were infectious. Premier Gladys Berejiklian says that although case numbers have plateaued in the last week, it is too soon to know if the current outbreak will worsen. She has also advised of a further delay in releasing a post-lockdown ‘road map’; it was first flagged on 7 July, and the state government had intended to release it on 28 July, the day on which the lockdown of Greater Sydney was extended by four weeks. Meanwhile, Berejiklian will now aim for six million people in NSW to be vaccinated by the end of August. Some 3.9 million doses have been administered to date.
