Rio Tinto is again seeking approval from the New South Wales Government for an expansion of the Mount Thorley Warkworth coal mine in the Hunter Valley. The Land & Environment Court overturned a decision to approve the project, and Rio re-submitted its plans for the mine in June 2014. Rio has warned that the mine will not be economically viable beyond 2015 unless the expansion is approved, and has argued that the mine will inject $A1.5bn into the state’s economy over two decades

A New South Wales parliamentary inquiry will hold a public hearing on lockout laws for licensed venues on 4 September 2014. The rules were introduced in February, and prohibit venues from admitting patrons after 1:30am. The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ submission to the inquiry notes that the laws have led to fewer people attending St Vincent’s hospital with alcohol-related injuries, although proprietors of some venues say the lockout has led to increased violence toward staff

The New South Wales Government’s parliamentary inquiry into home schooling will commence public hearings in September 2014. Some 3,238 students were registered for home schooling in the state in December 2013, but groups that are involved in home schooling believe that the unofficial figure is much higher. The Department of Education’s submission to the inquiry notes the lack of procedures to gauge the true extent of unregistered home education
