It has been revealed that BHP used its pre-budget submission to urge the federal government to include nuclear power in the nation’s energy mix in order to help achieve its climate targets. BHP’s chief technical officer Laura Tyler had previously told a forum in 2022 that nuclear energy needs to be "part of the conversation" and that uranium should be considered as a source of baseload power. The International Energy Agency has also stated that nuclear power can play an important role in the energy transition, while Opposition leader Peter Dutton used his budget reply speech in May to argue the case for small modular nuclear reactors.

Scott Morrison: No issue with nuclear power but it doesn’t stack up

Original article by Ben Potter
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 9-Oct-18

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has questioned the merits of nuclear power from an investment perspective. While Morrison says he does not have any issues with nuclear energy, he argues that there is a stronger investment case for Hydro Tasmania’s proposed pumped hydro project. Several nuclear power projects in the US and the UK have been marred by cost blowouts, while a recent report by Deloitte noted that the all-in cost of nuclear power has risen over the last eight years. In contrast, there has been a sharp fall in the cost of solar and wind power.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has responded to calls for a moratorium on coal exports and new coal mines by arguing that doing so would actually increase carbon emissions. He notes that Australian coal tends to be much cleaner than that of other countries. Meanwhile, the Federal Government’s submission to the Nuclear Royal Commission in South Australia presses the case for considering nuclear power as part of the nation’s future energy mix.
