Market Research Update – Page: Online : 9-Sep-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 50 per cent of Australians aged 14+ (9.8 million) had access to one or more types of paid TV services in their home in the six months to August 2016. The survey also shows that 28 per cent of Australians (5,595,000 people) have Subscription Video on Demand, while 27 per cent (5,309,000) have linear pay-TV. The bulk of SVOD’s growth is attributable to Netflix, but other services can now be found in the homes of around 1.4 million Australians. However, over 60 per cent of these subscribers also have Netflix.

Foxtel has revealed plans to launch a lower-cost version of its Play streaming service in December 2016. The new product is expected to be offered at a similar price to rival subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Stan, and Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh is confident that it will primarily be taken up by non-Foxtel households rather than current customers. Meanwhile, Foxtel has commissioned a new TV version of "Picnic At Hanging Rock" and secured a new content deal with HBO.

Anti-siphoning rules ‘rob sport’

Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delany says the pay-TV channel and Foxtel have invested $A1.2bn in sports over the last four years, and he argues that many sports would not be viable without this contribution. Delany has criticised the anti-siphoning list, noting that Foxtel cannot buy the exclusive rights to 1,800 sports events yet telcos and streaming video providers have no such restrictions. He also notes that the Seven Network bought the rights to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games and proceeded to charge for premium content that was streamed online.

Australian pay-TV provider Foxtel has reported that its subscriber base grew by 4.7 per cent in 2015-16 to 2.9 million, while its customer churn rate rose by 1.3 per cent to 12.2 per cent. Foxtel’s EBITDA was 2.2 per cent lower at $A880m, but revenue rose by 4.6 per cent to $A3.3bn. CEO Peter Tonagh says Foxtel’s marketing will emphasise that the company streams video on demand to any device rather than merely providing a linear TV service. He adds that it boasts more of the biggest box-office hits from 2015 than Netflix.

Foxtel chief waves off Ten takeover talk

Original article by Dominic White
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 29 : 9-May-16

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh has downplayed speculation that the pay-TV group could seek to acquire free-to-air broadcaster Ten Network if cross-media ownership rules are relaxed. He argues that the competition regulator could be expected to closely scrutinise such a deal, and notes that a merger with Ten would make it more difficult for Foxtel to enter commercial arrangements with other free-to-air networks. Foxtel bought a 13.8 per cent stake in Ten in 2015.
