The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court has committed Cardinal George Pell to stand trial on several charges of historic sex offences. They include alleged sexual assaults at a swimming pool in Ballarat in the 1970s and at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s. However, Magistrate Belinda Wallington struck out many of the charges against Cardinal Pell. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been released on bail. The barrister representing Cardinal Pell will seek to have each charge dealt with by a separate trial.

Ali Khalif Shire Ali appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 28 November to face terrorism-related charges, having been arrested on the previous day. Police allege that he was trying to secure an automatic weapon with the intention of carrying out a terrorist attack in Melbourne’s Federation Square on New Year’s Eve 2017. It is understood Ali has been under surveillance by counter-terrorism officers for two years, while he has claimed ASIO tried to recruit him as an informant. Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan says police are looking to see if Ali has links to other radicals.

Catholic Church officials say Cardinal George Pell’s career in the Vatican is almost certainly over, even if he is cleared of historical sexual abuse offences. Cardinal Pell has stood aside as Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy of the Holy See and will return to Melbourne to defend the charges in court. He has been summonsed to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 26 July, and he has told a press conference in Rome that the allegations are false and being formally charged will give him the opportunity to clear his name.

One in 270 people charged with crimes are bikies

Original article by Nino Bucci
The Age – Page: 4 : 14-Oct-14

Victorian Attorney-General Robert Clark has reaffirmed the State Government’s determination to pursue outlaw motorcycle gangs, after recently enacting special legislation to deal with them. This is despite official data showing that just 0.36% of all suspects charged by Victoria Police during 2013 were "bikies", and for violent crimes the ratio was only 0.34%. The Opposition claims that the expensive focus on this small minority of offenders means crime rates overall are rising
