Manhunt for intruder after major security break at ABC HQ

Sydney police are investigating a security breach at the ABC’s Ultimo headquarters on 5 September. The intruder was able to enter the building by following an ABC employee through security gates at the rear. He assaulted a female staff member and then gained access to one of the ABC’s radio studios, causing it to have to cancel a live broadcasting and switch to pre-recorded programming. The ABC closed the foyer at its Ultimo building to public access in June 2017, following a risk assessment by the Australian Federal Police and advice from a private security firm.

The number of people with a mental illness taken to hospital by police in New South Wales rose from 3,000 in 2000 to close to 50,000 in 2014. Police believe the rise has been caused by the increasing use of drugs. Date revealed for inquest into cafe siege deaths

A coronial inquest into the siege at Lindt Cafe in Sydney’s Martin Place will begin on 29 January 2015. A New South Wales Coroner’s Court official said on 14 January that the inquest will examine whether the three deaths could have been prevented, rather than apportioning blame. Barbieri jailed 26 years for killing police inspector

Supreme Court of New South Wales (NSW) judge Robert Allan Hulme has sentenced Mitchell Barbieri to 35 years’ imprisonment, with eligibility for parole after 26 years. Barbieri was allowed to plead guilty to manslaughter after initially having been charged with murder over the stabbing death of NSW police officer Bryson Anderson in late 2012. The perpetrator’s mother, Fiona Barbieri, has also received a jail term of 10 years with a minimum of seven years and six months for her role in the attack

New drunk, disorderly police powers penalise the most vulnerable

The New South Wales Ombudsman found that new "drunk and disorderly" police powers are disproportionately penalising vulnerable people. The ombudsman reviewed the first year of operation of the new powers from October 2011 to September 2012. During the period, 33,580 directions were issued to intoxicated people using the new powers. There were only 484 fines or charges, but 40 per cent were issued to vulnerable people
