About 100,000 people attended a pro-Palestine protest in the Melbourne CBD on Sunday, while similar events were held nationwide. Victorian police have stated that they had a "highly visible presence" at the rally but made no arrests on the day. However, Opposition leader Brad Battin says more than 22,000 police shifts have been diverted to the weekly pro-Palestine rallies, when police could have been dealing with the state’s escalating crime crisis. Premier Jacinta Allan has previously stated that people have a right to protest peacefully and that this right should be respected. Shadow police minister David Southwick agrees, but he says the pro-Palestine protests have gone "well and above that", and people no longer feel safe visiting the CBD.

‘Cover up’: Review’s explosive findings on Andrews’ crash with cyclist

Original article by Michael Warner
Herald Sun – Page: Online : 17-Sep-24

Former Victorian premier Daniel Andrews is under renewed scrutiny over a collision between his family’s car and a young cyclist in 2013. An expert review of the incident by Dr Raymond Shuey has been released; he was state’s former Assistant Commissioner for Traffic and Operations. The report has concluded that Andrews’ vehicle had been "travelling at speed" and on the wrong side of the road when the collision occured. Shuey also found that the Victoria Police investigation that supported Andrews’ version of the incident was "deeply flawed" and "contrary to the available evidence", while he contends that the police had engaged in an "overt cover-up" to protect Andrews, who was Opposition leader at the time.

Protestors who took part in demonstrations against the Land Forces 24 Expo in Melbourne on Wednesday have been accused of squirting an irritant up the nostrils of some police horses and the visors of some riders. Victoria Police stated that some Mounted Branch members and stable hands had shown signs of skin irritation when washing down horses after their shift, while an assessment of horses on Thursday morning revealed that their symptoms had subsided. Five protestors were arrested during more subdued demonstrations on Thursday, while police are investigating the assault of a conference attendee, who also had urine and faeces tipped on him when he was trying to enter the event.

Premier Daniel Andrews has launched a royal commission into Victoria Police’s use of a defence barrister as a registered informant. The High Court was scathing on 3 December in its attack on Victoria Police’s actions, accusing it of "reprehensible conduct" and of potentially corrupt behaviour. Well-known criminals and underworld figures may have to be released as a result of Victoria Police’s actions, while having to compensate criminals is not out of the question.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Victoria Police’s Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton say the Bourke Street rampage by Hassan Khalif Shire Ali was clearly a terrorist attack, rejecting claims by his family that he was mentally ill. Ashton has also warned that law enforcement agencies lack the resources to fully monitor the "hundreds" of Muslims in Australia who have been radicalised. Police have revealed that Shire Ali had links to other Islamic State supporters, including Khaled Sharrouf and Brighton siege perpetrator Yacqub Khayre.

Better data needed to track extent of family violence

Original article by Craig Butt
The Age – Page: 6 : 27-Jan-15

Some improvement has been made in recent years to the collecting of domestic abuse data, raised as an issue by 2015 Australian of the Year and anti-violence campaigner Rosie Batty. Victorian Department of Justice statistics use formats that make exact interpretation very difficult, while Victoria Police is unable to collate its information on cases for release to the media. Personal safety data compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggest that close to 17% of women have been victims of physical violence perpetrated by a spouse or lover

Drunk? Intoxicated? Police seek clarity

Original article by Nino Bucci

Victorian police want to bring the state in line with New South Wales on laws regarding drunkenness. At present Victoria’s Liquor Control Reform Act makes a distinction between drunkenness and intoxication, while there is no such distinction in NSW. The Act includes a definition of intoxication but does not define what constitutes drunkenness. Victoria is the only state in which public drunkenness is still a criminal office

A series of assaults have occurred in Victorian courts against police prosecutors, who in response have begun to appear in plain clothes rather than in uniform. The staff are not armed, and Police Association secretary Ron Iddles notes that the state’s WorkSafe authority has recommended boosting security at the Moorabbin Justice Centre. Victoria Police may soon deploy protective services officers, as the existing employees of private contractor Wilson Security at the facility lack arrest powers

Victoria Police Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles has told the Shepparton Magistrates Court that crucial forensic evidence had been destroyed. The court is hearing the "cold case" matter of local teenager Michelle Buckingham’s murder three decades ago. It has emerged that in 1994, a decision was made by police to transfer evidence to a new storage facility and to dispose of material relating to as many as 40 "cold case" investigations

Victoria Police apologise, pay compensation to bash victim

Original article by Jane Lee

Victoria Police have apologised and paid compensation to a woman who was injured in a police raid in 1996. In 2001, the police and the state government were ordered to pay $A315,000 compensation to Corinna Horvath and three others. However, the government successfully appealed against the ruling. In May 2014, the United Nations Human Rights Commission ruled in favour of Horvath. On 19 September 2014, Chief Commissioner Ken Lay informed Horvath that an ex-gratia payment had been approved
