Port Phillip City Council and the City of Yarra would be abolished under a plan being put forward by City of Melbourne lord mayoral candidate Gary Morgan. Morgan says he will urge the state government to include the two councils within an expanded City of Melbourne if his campaign to be elected mayor is successful, saying that to do so would deliver significant cost efficiencies, and that it made sense to "bring them together". He said that if the state government implemented his plan, reviews would then be held to see if other neighbouring councils could be brought into an expanded City of Melbourne.

ALP fears for 10 seats amid late challenges as Victorian polling day nears

Labor strategists believe that the party could potentially lose 8-10 seats at the Victorian election on Saturday, and these seats are likely to be targeted by both major political parties in the final days of the election campaign. The loss of so many seats could reduce Labor to a minority government, as some of these seats are likely to fall to Greens and independent candidates rather than the Coalition. Meanwhile, the state government’s Suburban Rail Loop dominated the election on Wednesday, with the Opposition pushing Premier Daniel Andrews to release costings for the project.

The fallout from the Liberals’ rout in the Victorian election is continuing, with the party’s federal vice-president Karina Okotel criticising the ill-fated campaign in an email to some party members. Amongst other things, Okotel has described the Liberals’ advertising campaign as "hopeless" and said the party had failed to respond to internal polling which showed that the election campaign was not resonating with voters. Okotel also said senior Victorian Liberals such as president Michael Kroger and former leader Matthew Guy should accept responsibility for the election loss.

Melbourne lord mayoral candidate Gary Morgan has pledged to exhume upwards of 6,000 skeletons buried under the Queen Victoria Market carpark if he wins the upcoming election. Morgan said the skeletons would be DNA tested, and their descendants would be allowed to decide where they should be buried. Morgan, who was one of six candidates taking part in a forum at the Melbourne Press Club, said exhuming the skeletons would enable an above-ground car park to be moved underground instead, with a park to be put on the surface. Other campaign promises aired at the forum included a proposal by Labor candidate Jennifer Yang to ban alcohol at the Town Hall.

Enemies plot for Andrews’ head

Labor figures have rejected claims by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews that he knew nothing about its rorts-for-votes scheme. They claim that either Andrews or caucus approved the scheme, which was engineered by former Labor treasurer John Lenders, and they contend that caucus had no knowledge of the scheme. Andrews’ factional enemies within the Labor party are keen to destabilise his leadership over the issue, and want Labor MPs involved in the scheme to disclose what they knew about it.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says nobody should lose their job over the misuse of taxpayers’ funds during the 2014 state election campaign. He notes that the report of Ombudsman Deborah Glass made no recommendations about taking further action against any individual. Her investigation found that some field organisers were employed full-time by Labor while also being employed for two days a week as electorate officers on the public payroll. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy says the government ministers responsible for the $A388,000 rort should resign.

New spending of similar magnitude has been pledged by both major parties on hospitals, in the final week of the campaign for the Victorian state election on 29 November 2014. However, there are also significant differences, with the Government favouring the Monash Children’s hospital and the Northern Hospital in Epping, while the Australian Labor Party has a focus on Orygen Youth Health in Parkville and a women’s and children’s hospital in Sunshine. Even the details for the proposed heart hospital in Clayton promised by both sides differ

Doctors criticise parties for vague poll bed promises

Tony Bartone, president in Victoria of the Australian Medical Association, has said neither major political party is convincing on health in the campaigns for the 29 November 2014 state election. He criticised the Government’s failure to issue details on where a supposed 800 new hospital beds have been allocated. Meanwhile the pledge to invest $A200m in under-utilised hospitals by the Australian Labor Party was also not addressing the longer-term issue of an ageing population. The Coalition has vowed to open a further 800 beds if re-elected
